I like the pacifism stuff moving morward. It’s timeless. A message that is increasingly poignant. It also makes the Finn arc a little bit more necessary even if I think it could have been handled in a better way. Everything else I basically loved.

Counter-Point: It’s incredibly safe and people keep telling me it’s not and that’s why I dislike it so much. The old generation is gone now, with Luke and Snoke dead, but otherwise every stake ended in a red herring and none of the characters even suffered the “minor” loss of a hand.

Marvel is being tossed around like a pejorative term in this thread, but Rey staying good and Ren staying evil and Finn not dying is exactly what would happen in a Marvel film as well, so maybe cool it with the weird comparisons.

Hell, even Marvel has Loki come around from villain to good guy in a believable manner that would’ve worked for Ren prior to this film.

It is a gorgeous looking film—seriously, some series high visuals—with a ridiculous number of plotting and tone flaws.

This movie is SO safe that no one loses a hand. That would have been some risk, someone losing a hand in the second film of a Star Wars trilogy.

Don’t be needlessly sarcastic and condescending. That reference was made for that exact reason. Empire is flawless and not safe in part because it was willing to commit to irreparable damage. This movie didn’t commit to that anywhere beyond Luke.

It looks like both films have that in common then...

...you got me there? Don’t get any single point you think you’re making in response to my argument though so cool. I’m owned. Woo.

They literally replace his hand minutes later. It wasn’t that big a deal. It’s what that loss represents is what goes on to matter. especially after Luke cuts off Vader’s hand and stares at his mechanical hand and realizes what he could become and how close he already is to going down that path.

What irreparable damages did ESB have? I’m pretty sure Luke got a new hand, Han was thawed, and C-3PO was put back together

Exactly. Hence my use of “minor.” Even at its most daring moments, Star Wars has always been pretty safe and this movie continues that. I just wish it hadn’t. And where the hand allowed for connection in a later film as you brought up...will the same happen for the moments I mentioned from this film? Obviously, we have to wait a few years to find out. But I just don’t buy the “this movie isn’t safe” argument in the slightest. It changed up how the story was presented for a bit, but otherwise it was pretty standard fair.

Maybe I’m not versed in the lore as much as many of you, but from a pure writing/plot view, this was extremely safe and kind of a mess.

Maybe I’ll come around a bit more on future viewings, because they will happen because I do love the series, but my initial reaction is so poor I won’t be seeing it multiple times in theaters like literally all of the other films between initial and re-releases.

I don’t mean to be a dick, but I don’t have the time to walk through the entire film and explain each twist or risk or subverting of expectations. This thread and the Internet is full of that analysis. I do recommend reading and listening to the people who have gone in depth on this part of the film.

This is not a safe Star Wars movie, especially not as a sequel to the safest one in the saga. That would have looked very different.

Is the new requirement to post in this thread to look up tweets from nobodies about how they didn't like a film so that I can feel better about liking the film? As long as it's not harming the director or actors then what's the need to continuously get off on searching out people who didn't like the film? Who cares if someone doesn't like the film you like? I thought that stuff was reserved for Reddit.

The fact you think I haven’t been reading says a lot. I legit have a degree and two minors in critical thinking involving writing, reading, and understanding story. I have the cognitive skills necessary to understand every argument out there and in this thread.

I just think they’re wrong and it’s amazing how defensive and offensively having that counter point is treated and my intelligence questioned because of that. Despite overwhelming majority of people I’ve seen sharing the same reaction.

I’m sorry but Rey was never going bad. My friend Max explained it like this: little girls all over the world love Rey and aspire to be like her. There’s no chance Disney would let her go bad and I think overall it would be against the character if she did. I’m not sure what’s safe about most of the movie being in space and on an island. Maybe you have a different definition of safe from everyone else in the thread is all I can think.
