I can’t belivee we saw how they get suits ironed haha.

Also, just watched Gremlins the other night, and the scene in TLJ where the porgs take up nest in the falcon totally reminds me of it.

Painfully I bought a ticket for noon yesterday and before the previews were over my boss called me twice and sent me multiple emails (I wfh) and I sucked it up and admitted to myself I needed to leave. Thankfully ended up that a new theater opened right near me and didn't presell tickets before Thursday, so the evening shows were wide open and I was able to get a good reserved seat for last night. Down $15 but it's Star Wars, so w/e.

I don't think I could rank this yet as I had pretty mixed feelings at different points while watching it, but I could not have walked out on a bigger high. The first hour felt weird to me - it was good, but it didn't give me that warm and fuzzy "this is real Star Wars" feeling TFA did. I thought in that movie the scenes on Jakku were just so incredibly authentic to what the original trilogy felt like, so spending so much time there early on gave the rest of the film the license to do whatever it wanted. This is one area where I'm completely fine with JJ taking the reins on IX - it's going to have the perfect feel.

But beyond that I thought this was kind of amazing. Where JJ might beat Rian a bit in productive use of sentimentality, Johnson wipes the floor with him almost everywhere else. The storytelling, the risk taking, the battle scenes...he killed it. I'm not surprised the film is divisive but I find myself on the positive side with nearly every complaint.

-I really liked the Finn and Rose adventure. The casino was fun and felt fresh, like if the bar where we meet Maz in TFA wasn't such a retread. And the stable kids were an awesome touch. This movie felt like the necessary transition where we are shown "real" Star Wars can exist without Luke/Han/Leia. Planting the seeds of a new generation of resistance was cool and incredibly valuable there. And let's be honest - how refreshing is it to see a storyline where a giant risky quest doesn't get deus ex machina'd to success but instead results in a shitload of good guys dying?

-Rey being a nobody, fuck yeah. I won't be devastated if this turns out to be a red herring, but I am so satisfied if this is real.

-I think Snoke is lame as hell so I was glad to see him get surprise murdered halfway through the trilogy. Perfect way to give Kylo the signature "there's still good in him!" turn and then (hopefully) can that for good 3 minutes later.

-Similarly Phasma is whatever to me. She is cool, I would have enjoyed more conflict with her, but I'm not gonna knock the series for her relatively small screen time/story.

-Leia floating scene was fine narratively but looked silly

-Felt a little CGI heavy with some of the creatures

-Light speed crash was the best space moment of the series

-Salt planet stuff was all incredible.

So, I'd like to see it again soon. I thought the last hour of Rogue One was basically as good as Star Wars gets and the final act of this blew that away. Seems like fan anger is almost entirely based on expectations of what would happen not matching up with what we got. I don't get that at all.

Anybody else love that general/commander on the dreadknot (dont know how to spell this yet lol) in the beginning. He felt like a character form the OG trilogy.

    Loved that little role.

I generally agree and said earlier in the thread I loved how things just didnt work out a lot in this movie which is what happens in life. There is some Deus Ex Machina with BB8 saving them at the last second with the AT-ST. Also with BB8 and DJ saving them on the ship just in time.
I think there are a lot of moments in this movie that are possible best moment of the series for different people. All of which I think top the best moments of TFA (despite me loving that movie still.

Light Speed Crash, Luke and Leia together, Luke vs. Kylo, The Reveal of Luke force projecting, Luke dying, Death of Snoke, Rey and Kylo vs the guards, Yoda and Luke, Rey and Kylo breaking the lightsaber and probz more im forgetting.

Pretty much agree with this 100%

I've seen a lot of people say that the whole Canto Bight mission was pointless because the plan didn't end up succeeding. I personally loved the subversion of expectation there.[/spolier]

Finn went from a deserting coward to trying to suicide bomb the first order......Poe grew from a flyboy trigger happy careless pilot to someone capable of leading.

Anybody else wish Finn got to go through with it in the end? They had that long drawn out moment of him in the cockpit and I was like "holy shit, holy shit, holy shit i cant believe they are doing this. Holy shit. This is so beautiful, this is the stakes that I w.....oh. Fuck."

It makes sense I guess. But I think it would've been so powerful. There would be no moment with Rey and Finn hugging, but I think it wouldve made his arc throughout the story actually have a purpose in the narrative. His arc was great, but still doesnt mean his relevance was all that much.

I also thought the Rose and Finn end scene wasnt bad but it was a lil too cheese for me.

Did anyone else think when they first panne out to the space horse racing track that it was going to be pod racing?

Kinda wondering if the friends I was with maybe took me out of the movie too much last night. They hated it. My wife wants to see it, so I may go give it another watch later. I really wanted to like it. Maybe a more focused viewing will be good.

Fair point, and to be honest reading some of the comments in here has made me come around to it some more since my initial reaction last night. I think a second viewing would help.

One thing I don't like about the 'space horse racing stuff feeling straight out of the prequels' criticism - was that kind of stuff really why the prequels sucked? Now granted it's been a long time since I've sat through them and I'm sure there's stuff child me enjoyed that adult me would think is stupid, but imo those movies sucked way more because of bad overcomplications in the plot, bad dialogue, and bad acting than they did because they let themselves cut loose with things like podracing.

His relevance is that he's a former Trooper trying to find his place in this war. Him dying would've been awful. Him surviving was as important as that final scene with the kid acting out the legend of Luke Skywalker.

This isn't directed towards you specifically, but I hate the idea that death is automatically good storytelling. What an awful understanding of stakes.

Regardless of your first viewing setting, I say see it again. There is a ton of stuff in this movie. Not saying you’ll suddenly love it, but it will help you clarify your thoughts in either direction.

I think the distinction made in Rose’s philosophy of saving what you love over fighting what you hate is vital.

That may look the same in some actions, but the intent behind it can drastically change what that action comes across as.

Yeah, I mean I know I’ll have some gripes still, but I definitely think seeing it again (combined w/ thoughts I’ve read on the www) would be good regardless.

It’s weird, last night I was so disappointed I had no intention of seeing it ever again. Now I’m thinking about giving it another shot today. Ha.

When I walked out of the movie I was like, 'that was... interesting." And then 30 minutes later I loved it so much. It was a lot to absorb and once it settled it was so satisfying.
