My copy of The Alchemy Index arrived in almost perfect condition. Numbered #512 (unsure out of how many). Looking forward to opening it this weekend and playing it.

Wow, the Alchemy Index looks soooo good. Some pics of the records are on instagram with the thrice tag. I'm so excited

It really is an impressive package. It definitely ‘pops’ more than the first press with the gold foil text.

Alright well I wasn’t planning on getting personal in the Vinyl Thread, but here it goes.

tldr; I believe people fuck up and do bad shit but can change and are deserving of the opportunity to improve themselves as people.

I’ve done bad shit that I’m very ashamed of. I’ve hurt other people, sometimes knowingly. Maybe the things I’m guilty of aren’t the same as Jesse, but some people would probably say they approach that level. I was hanging out with a 16 year old girl when I was 21, buying her booze and flirting in a general sense. I married someone who I had grown to hate, justifying deep down that she was a financial ticket to an easier life. (She left me for someone else so no harm no foul, I didn’t take any of her money in the divorce) I continually slept with a woman who wanted nothing more than to be with me, but who I continued to reject knowing she would be there when I was lonely. I invaded an ex’s personal space and entered her home when she was gone because I was so overcome with anxiety and depression that I literally could not stop myself. I’ve said some things during break ups that are so horribly emotionally abusive and manipulative that I have never even told a therapist.

People can change and grow over the years. Most people don’t have their most shameful acts out there for the public to judge. But maybe if my shit was out there and you owned a company you might not hire me knowing how shitty of a person I had been. Maybe I’d be labeled as a predator or as someone who emotionally abuses women. Maybe I’m “garbage” as Jesse West put it in his post above. I think I’ve changed as a person significantly since those days and I’m really glad that it’s not out there for everyone to scrutinize.

I am in no way telling you that you can’t feel a certain way about Jesse and Brand New. I’m not telling you that you are obligated to support them, your boycott is justifiable. But I deserve the same opportunity to make my own decision about what music I listen to and what records I purchase and what shows I go to. And because I see the world through my life experiences, I choose to believe that Jesse can change or maybe that he already has changed substantially. I think it’s likely that he has suffered from many of the same mental health issues, feelings of inadequacy, etc that I have. That’s not an excuse for his behavior, but it provides a reference point for me. Perhaps that’s not good enough for anyone else or for the scene as a whole, but it’s my decision.

I’m sure that sounds like a bunch of excuses or “whataboutism” but it’s been on my mind since this all started happening. I haven’t told anyone else that they NEED to feel a certain way or that they are stupid for feeling the way that they do. I've tried to stay out of the whole thing altogether.

And on the off chance that your original question was more about the money and less about the moral conundrum of supporting the band...I don't spend money on much of anything so I can splurge on records every once in awhile.

Change is possible, but why would anyone believe he's changed when he didn't even acknowledge his victims or the things he's accused of in his "apology" and has done nothing to stop his overzealous fans from attacking and harassing his victims?

Sorry man, I was asked how/why I would still continue to listen to Brand New and I tried to explain that in my post. I'm not too interested in taking this further within this thread, and since the user who asked me the question liked your post but didn't acknowledge my response I can see my opinion probably isn't well received here.

Has this been a heavily discussed term already? I haven't kept up much with the threads here but sometimes see it used on /r/politics.

Honestly am just very tired physically, but even more tired of hearing excuses from men. For other men. (Although I don’t know your gender and do hate to assume gender.)

Had no intention to debate tbh. You’ll listen to what you want, and that’s fine. Brand New will probably come on shuffle on Spotify, and I’ll enjoy it for a minute- until I remember that Jesse Lacey is just another gross dude who has taken advantage of young girls. I can only hope that crosses your mind while dropping $150 on a record.

To the above conversation, briefly, as someone who loves nearly all genres/eras of music, it’s a slippery slope you go down when you ostracize an artist or a band because of past transgressions. I’m a massive Beatles fan, but John Lennon beat his wives and mostly ignored his son for years. There’s hundreds of examples of absolutely abhorent behavior with tons of bands, and we’re nieve to believe it stopped happening when we got into music.

Am I Jesse Lacey superfan number one anymore? No. But do I see myself (as a fan) being able to accept this, in time, yes.

Obviously, everyone is different, and you are free to do as you will. But if I personally wanted to do away with every band or person that I know has done weird shitty, terrible, wholly illegal, unmoral, near unforgivable things, my record collection would shrink by hundreds. It’s an unfortunate reality, but it’s the reality nonetheless.

It infects every single thread here.

The dead horse has been beaten back to life and killed again, cycle repeat.

The Brand New thread seems to be the place to talk in circles about it. Keep it in there.

Edit: I apologize. I’m not a moderator. I have no authority. Just poked my head in to talk Vinyl and now I’m exacerbating the issue by taking about it at all.

I mean, if they want to talk about their Brand New vinyl in the vinyl thread then more power to them. They just better be ready for the replies...

It's my personal belief that if the band is brought up it's the responsibility of the people who care to not allow that conversation to happen without bringing this stuff up. Not even a little erasure is cool.

I highly recommend everyone to check out Cherry Glazerr's APOCALIPSTICK- definitely in my top 10 for the year and they have a sale on the vinyl for only $9.99 (when using the code "SCHOLIDAY") here: Apocalipstick - Cherry Glazerr | Secretly Store

Just ordered it and I am hyped.

    I thought it's a pretty sound-true to life statement...?

To the vinyl topic, first world problem - Christmas is a terrible time for me with gifts because the people I exchange gifts with tell me not to purchase any records in November-December. It's happened more than a few times that I buy what they already bought for me.

It's left me with duplicate Childish, Kanye, Lil Bub, Smashing Pumpkins, Jimmy Eat World, and Frank Turner records.

I really want to buy the new Frank Turner boxset. :(
