It just felt so poorly done. the idea of wanting to show that Leia is strong with the force is totally fine, and I think a great character moment, but her just standing with her hand outstretched just floating towards a door was so bad. I'm not a director or a creative movie mind, but there just feels like there would have been a better/more badass way for her to save herself.
I guess my gripe is not with the actual moment/plot point, but just with the way it was executed.

Fair enough. It worked for me. I’m glad it wasn’t a “bad ass “ moment. I felt something like this suited her character.

Yea, that back to back initial shot is something I can’t wait to see about in 6 hours.

    Edit: to see again*

That moment where they're like back-to-back fighting off the guards in slow-mo was one of the best shots of the film. Such a striking image in such a cool location. Definitely would love that on a poster.

the more we discuss the more i like the movie, it's nice to see other viewpoints of parts i didnt necessarily like or take a certain way. Very hype to see it again tomorrow.

i took that as they were setting, which i think symbolized lukes departure. i dont want to say death because i dont think he's done.

    Either one would work.

setting-signals the end of his life in his mortal body and mirrors the famous shot on Tatooine. Rising-signals a new hope that he helped bring about and to a new day. A new hope, if you will. [/spoilers]

I think he HAS to. After his convo with Yoda and Yoda scolding him to pass on what he has learned, he never even speaks to Rey again. He has to be back to help guide her in some way.

Yeah I took it to be a deliberate directorial decision to not explicitly say whether it was rising or setting, because either of these interpretations works and leaving it ambiguous is better for that reason.

As I think about it, I’m pretty sure it was setting. The first establishing shot of that moment was day, was it not?

Actually I don't remember? It seemed like it was in that dusk/dawn lighting as well but I could be wrong.

I think the negative reaction to it means it definitely could have been a little more clear/well-developed, but conceptually it's a great character arc. Also, and I hate to keep repeating this, but Phasma really should have been an integral part of his overall trilogy arc, which would have helped.
