From the department of interesting timing: Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton said today that he’d name Sen. Al Franken’s replacement at 10 a.m. Minnesota time tomorrow, the morning after tonight’s Alabama election.

Arguably, Dayton is jumping the gun a bit — Franken has announced his intention to step down, but has not yet actually stepped down or set a specific retirement date.

But Dayton may want to get ahead of the story and force Franken’s hand. That’s because some prominent liberals are suggesting that Franken should reconsider his retirement if Moore is elected, subjecting himself to the ethics committee process (along with Moore) instead of stepping down. Given that Franken wasn’t especially contrite in his retirement speech, one wonders if Franken isn’t thinking that way too.

There's a lot of "Exit polls show Roy Moore is hovering around the teens" jokes on twitter.

  10. I will say, the exit polls for a special election are pretty nuts. People are engaged in a way I don't think I've seen in my life.

I gotta say, I am pretty surprised to read that roughly 25% of Alabama's postulation is white college educated, at least according to 538's live blog. NEver would have guessed the number was that high.

  15. I am soberly optimistic, but just barely. Cause I want a surprise even if I don't expect one.

There are two explanations for the seeming disappearance of Trump support. One is differential turnout, as Trump voters may have stayed home and so remained outside our sample. But to me, the more credible explanation is that some people are more likely to take an exit poll. Both Margolis and I found that when people declined to participate, they were more likely to say the name “Moore” as they passed — and they also seemed more likely to have bumper stickers or clothes that suggested a lean toward the GOP. Democrats were definitely more excited to claim their vot

    Makes sense.

    yup

my confidence in a decent result is very very low at this point.

still would love to be pleasantly surprised, but still think Moore wins and still wouldn't be surprised if its by a reasonably large margin
