so @DesolateEarth i hate to have kept you waiting only to be disappointed, but i wasnt really feeling casually dressed & deep in conversation by funeral for a friend. that surprised me, bc im usually pretty into post-hardcore, and i was passingly familiar with some of this bands singles. it felt pretty generic to me and a lot of it blended together, especially in the first half. i will say i did like the back half much more, and the two closing tracks were definitely the standouts. idk, it just felt like it didnt offer much that other early 2000s post-hardcore bands couldnt do better. i also didnt like the screamer too much. clean guy was v good tho and i will say, i like that it wasnt all just strictly screamed-verses-sung-choruses kinda stuff

 

@bachna84 sorry I'm here for you buddy! I had on off weekend so I tried to take some time away from the interwebz yesterday/today.

Luckily seeing @Max Bemis tonight has fixed me up so I will get recommendations to you tonight or tomorrow.

Chon - Homey (recommended by @skogsraet )

It had been a while since I listened to a full instruental album, and this one was a reminder of how good they can be. You can tell these guys have a very diverse taste in music. Parts of this made me think of jazz, r&b, post rock, even metal or videogame music. However, it is very cohesive, almost a 40 minute piece instead of 12 separate tracks. It's not purely instrumental, since there are a couple featured singers, but their voices are often used as an additional instrument. The guitar work in Homey is great - it is packed with warm arpeggios and cool guitar leaks. It is definitely a Spring/Summer album, but I still thoroughly enjoyed it.

Fav tracks: No Signal (I adore this song), Wave Bounce.

Alright. This week @js977 gave me Tideline's self-titled and record and Gang of Youths' Go Farther in Lightness.

Tidelines
I had a lot of fun listening to this record. I definitely hear a Saosin influence, with maybe some Circa Survive in there as well. Definitely right up my alley. The album is pretty much full of rippers all the way through. I'm actually surprised that this band isn't more popular than they are. They have the kind of sound that would probably appeal to fans of the bands I already mentioned, plus bands like I, The Mighty and Dance Gavin Dance. Cool stuff. I'm not sure of what kind of staying power this album will have for me -- I just don't listen to a ton of stuff that sounds like this anymore -- but I had a good time listening and can certainly imagine myself checking it out again in the future.

Gang of Youths
This album really, really impressed me. I will admit that I was a bit intimidated when I saw the runtime. I tend to gravitate to shorter, lean albums, so seeing that I was about to dive into an 80 minute album was daunting. I have to say, however, that I was consistently blown away by what I found when while listening. There are songs on this record that compete with the best I've heard this year. I hear so many different sounds in this band: Springsteen, The National, Gaslight. I wish I knew about this record when the weather was still warm. It would be great for a nice summer night. Overall, I'm just impressed that such an ambitious project pays off so well. I'm not entirely sold on a couple tracks -- I think Achilles and Le symbolique could potentially both be about half the length -- but I am very excited about most everything I find here. Really the only question now is, like the Tidelines album, what kind of staying power this record will have for me. I think this will either be the kind of album that I listen to regularly for years, or the kind of album that drops off really hard. I hope its the former, and I think it will be. My favorite songs were probably the first 3 songs, Do Not Let Your Spirit Wane, Persevere, and The Heart is A Muscle.

Haha well first let me say this better be exclusively referencing Say Anything. But I thought it would be interesting to hear a fresh take on that album. I'm a nice person I swear

 

It is, I'm unfamiliar with the other band. I see what you're saying but at what cost? At what cost.
I'm genuinely interested in the reaction as well tho

 

Farewell Continental is a band featuring Justin Pierre (from Motion City Soundtrack). It really leans into his 90s indie rock influences. Worth checking out in my opinion.

And hey I mean I like I Don't Think It Is. At the very least, it's redeemed by 17 Coked Up and Speeding, which is as good a song as Max has ever written.
