East Liverpool is an interesting, but depressing place. It's basically on the WV and PA border, separated only by a river. It's also really close to Steubenville that became nationally known for the high school football players that got found guilty of rape. Steubenville is a very corrupt town. Most of that general area got hit hard from manufacturing companies leaving and have never recovered.

I agree. Thank you for your post and your compassion. :-)

The majority of people acted like this when Chaldeans were being detained by ICE, and I'm still mad about it. It's like, y'all never cared about our suffering over the past century and never helped us when we asked. and now you're scapegoating us, one of the most vulnerable and ignored communities, which is something I expect from conservatives, not liberals. That only serves as confirmation for why they don't like liberals in the first place....(I mean I don't either but I'm not rw. Leftists were finally coming to our defense that time, lol, but still.) We don't make progress by finding people to blame. I don't think that's the right way of moving forward and fixing things.

I live in East Liverpool, and I wouldn't say there's a big opposition to Trump here. Opposition to WTI/Heritage Thermal, but not so much Trump. EL and Columbiana county is entirely right leaning.

    NYTimes covered it too.

Backfire Effect...they've made up their mind about those like Trump and Moore that they give unwavering support for, and dig even deeper upon anything contradictory to their beliefs. Makes everything political in their minds...

Thank you for introducing me to this term. I've tried (and failed) to talk to Trump supporters on a friend's Facebook and the Backfire Effect was inpenetrable. I decided to throw in the towel, beacuse you can't argue with illogical craziness.

The Unforgiving life of a forgotten Appalachian town, the former Pottery Capital of the World and all that. Most of the potteries and glass factories closed back in the 80s, and people have been struggling here ever since. The people here have been forgotten about, and lied to many times over. A few years ago I saw a statistic that 40% of the small population here is a the poverty level. Can't forget to mention the high cancer rate, and the high manganese air pollution is linked to lower IQs in children.

The Clinton administration played a huge hand in protecting WTI seeing as it's investors were friends of Bill and Hillary. There's been countless violations of the permit, but the oppositions voices don't matter here. An incredibly sad fact is that WTI/Thermal was built 1100 feet from an elementary school in a predominantly African American neighborhood. This city has never forgiven the Clintons.

You might actually be able to relate somewhat to this then. I grew up 20 minutes west of Cleveland, but when I was taking basketball reffing classes, we had to attend various meetings throughout the year in order be considered an active ref. Due to my work schedule and when the meetings fell, I actually had to drive the hour to hour and a half drive to East Liverpool for a meeting. And let me tell you, I felt like I was transported back in time to like the 1970's or 1980's in terms of technology (or lack thereof) and then the way people talked to one another. Basketball refs (and probably most sporting officials) are very much a good ole boys club, but this was another level and I just found myself fascinated listening to their discussions haha. It was one of the weirdest experiences I have had in a few years. But it was a very good reminder of how different the state of Ohio can be depending on which part you are in.

The 'You're not so Smart' podcast has 3 episodes on the Backfire Effect, and I HIGHLY recommend listening if you can. Episodes 93, 94, and 95.

Didn't stop anywhere to talk to anyone, but we drove through a couple of towns like that in West Virginia on our mini-road trip this summer....small towns with main streets with more than half the businesses shuttered and etc. We drove through on Route 60 so we passed through a whole bunch of small towns. And a whole bunch of shuttered coal mines and beautiful scenery.

I'm pretty sure route 60 is in the same general area as highway 77. Honestly some of my favorite places to drive through in terms of the scenery and mountains, but those towns are so depressing. That's kind of the same area where Randy Moss grew up and there is some deep seeded racism for sure. I remember one of the gas stations my brother and I stopped at alongside the mountains had what could only be described as a bathroom from a Halloween or Jason movie. It was at the end of long dark hallway in the basement and had flickering light haha.

Tons, it's like 3 hours of content...interviews with those that conducted the testing, additional examples etc. If this stuff is interesting to you, you'll be hooked immediately. The Machine Bias episode (#115) is a great listen as well...
