I got through about half of it today. I needed a break after the wake, but so far it is everything I was warned about.

I always thought that I would never see a worse movie than American Beauty. It has everything; bad acting, a repugnant script, silly directorial tricks. The film wants us to empathize with a middle-aged man who decides to quit his well-paying job to work at McDonald's and smoke marijuana and lift weights in an attempt to impress a teenage girl. It really has everything you look for in trash.

However, mother! might be worse. For the first half of the film it is just a silly and incompetent Biblical story, but then it becomes an obnoxious piece of trash that thinks having a random group of people eating a baby counts for something other than embarrassment. You don't want to be hyperbolic in moments like this, but if I ever saw Aronofsky in person I would have to strike him for making this movie.

When I was in the theater, I actually started laughing out loud during the baby scene. Not sure the last time I saw a movie go so far up its own ass.

Man, I’ve been mad at movies before but not on that level of rage.

You've never felt it was your duty to assault someone for making something you didn't enjoy?

Not yet, I shall hold that on reserve for when such a thing does. I mean, I haven’t seen The Emoji Movie yet.

I usually don't subject myself to things I don't enjoy. Which is why I haven't listened to Morrissey's new album. Although I think punching a racist, hate filled person who blamed the victims of sexual abuse is a little different than punching someone who made a movie you found pretentious.

I certainly wouldn’t hit Aronofsky. But I would like to ask, “whyyy??”

I honestly loved the movie. Totally get why people didn’t like it and that’s totally cool, no hate. Personally, I thought it was a cool metaphor for religion and the evil of mankind, especially in the wild third act with the house being dismantled by man. Yeah, it was ridiculous and pretentious but I was entertained and I enjoyed it.

yeah, when it comes down to it, it’s a movie. I hated it, but if people liked it...cest la vie

This will definitely go down as one of those decisive films in film history, either you like it or hate it. No middle ground. If that’s what Darren wanted to achieve, he did so.

There was not a lot of pretension in it. Aronofsky has always come off as stupid in interviews and comments about his work, including his rationale for why this film failed. It is more insulting to the intelligence of the viewing audience to make them sit through a student film that he made for his girlfriend that is half his age. Pretentious is one of those words that has lost all meaning in film criticism because of how people have used it against anything that did not have flying robots or fart jokes.

I looked through my list of the other movies I have seen this decade, and nothing really comes close. Room and Dallas Buyers Club were the closest competitors, but even those have some degree of merit. This is repulsive trash, and its attempt to position itself as the new Rosemary's Baby is absurd.

I’m super late to the game on this, but for those of you who saw this and Tree of Life in theater, which movie got the worse reaction?

Interesting, never heard such strong vitriol for Room before. I mean, I thought it was only okay, but intrigued that you were so appalled / offended, haha.

well i mean, i knew this was not going to be tetra's cup of tea. He hates Aranovsky and mainstream movies that past themselves off as 'indie house'.

Holy shit this movie was insane, I really liked it, not quite sure why there is rampant hate (even in just this page of the thread)

  24. Always squeamish about discussing movies here since I, uhhh, have bad taste I guess, but I generally enjoy/respect Aronofsky and pretty much loved this. It was definitely drawn-out and heavy-handed at times, but it was also self-aware, scathing, completely engrossing and relentlessly nightmarish. It delivered.

I legitimately do not understand how you could not care about her plight in this film, holy hell, what a performance
