I thought it was interesting and I liked the beat, but Untouchable was wayyyy too long

Eminem's pre-hiatus stuff does not get held to a high enough standard for the most part

I guess I'm on about the casual listener who has decided that Em is "washed up and going political for the money" purely because they haven't heard another Lose Yourself all over the radio. It sounds a crazy statement to make but I do think he's a little underrated as he has an arsenal of deep cuts from across his career. I'm just glad he's still inspired to create music at 45. I'm sure I won't love every song on Revival but he hasn't released a record yet where I haven't loved at least a few tracks.

If Eminem wasn't a white guy that got signed by Dre, these days he would be somewhere between Canibus and Busta Rhymes or Redman in terms of where certain (really most) people would place him in rap history (which, depending on where you land, is nothing to scoff at). Instead many of these people now call him G.O.A.T. So yeah, overrated. To be fair, a small subgroup of people also underrate him as a rapper I'd say.

I have never been a fan but I also don't get joy from hating on him, I'd say I'm a fairly neutral observer when it comes to Eminem.

He's probably one of the most famous, widely respected hip hop artists making music. He's already canonized. I don't think he's underrated at all.

Some of the songs in his catalogue are underrated is probably a more accurate statement.

I just keep hearing this bar play back in my head and the irony of it when I think about Eninem’s career nowadays

So much hate for Eminem here. I don't enjoy the beat on this track, but I enjoyed 'Walk on Water'. Still very excited for the new album, as Eminem is one of my favorite rappers of all time.

it's interesting though to me not surprising that most fans in this thread are nowhere to be seen in most other rap threads or even the general hip hop thread

This is pretty much my feeling. I like the song content but holy length batman. I will never not skip this song if i were to listen to this album in full. It’s too fucking long lol.

Eminem is rap for people that don't like rap. At least he is these days. But he's also a gateway rapper. I think he always has been. I had a fleeting interest in rap before I heard My Name Is and now it's my favourite genre and has been for 17 years. I'd like to say it was 2 Legit 2 Quit by Hammer that started my love affair, but I can't!

I was obsessed with rap in the mid to late 90s, well before Eminem came on the scene (at least mainstream scene with SSLP.) So he definitely wasn’t gateway for me. In fact, I never even really took him seriously until Eminem Show. When he first came out I thought he was cheesy and gimmicky and he still can be.

That said, he’s probably one of the 7 or 8 rappers I’m still interested in or still follow as for the most part I haven been getting into new music (rap or rock) for years now that I’m in my 30s.

    Translation: I’m old.

I'm in the same boat, except I was on board with Eminem from SSLP. I hated 'My Name Is' when I first heard it, but was a fan of 'I Just Don't Give a Fuck', so I gave the album a chance and loved it.

I'll always give Em a chance, and have found things to like on all of his albums. Nothing will ever match SSLP through TES though.

Ive been diving into his discog lately for the first time in a while, and I can't understand why some people shit on Recovery. I still love that album. Space Bound is probably his best post hiatus song imo.

Some songs are great, if he cut this album down to 10 songs it would be a good album but he has some really bad songs on here.

I've felt this way about MMLP2. Some great tunes on there (Bad Guy, Rap God, Love Game) that just drowns in the 19 track, hour and twenty minute mess.

In retrospect, the “Sing For The Moment” beat might have wrecked his career.
