The second record I listened to for @Mary V was Susanne Sundfør - Music For People In Trouble

This was a really good listen, and another artist I'm glad to be exposed to. She did a good job on this record doing a lot with a little. There are a lot of parts where it's simplistic but effective. Just a piano, just a flute solo, just a saxophone solo. "Mantra" kicks off the record and gives me some Damien Rice vibes. There are a couple of cool and effective spoken word interludes throughout the record, and a lot of different styles. There are some folky, almost country styled songs towards the beginning, and back to back tracks reminiscent of Lana Del Rey. There are some atmospheric elements that sound like they'd fit on a Bjork record. Very enjoyable listen!

Favorite Songs: "Mantra" "The Sound Of War" "No One Believes In Love" "The Golden Age"

This is the second album that @WolvesAreCircling182 assigned to me.

    Hawthorne Heights
    Zero
    2013

My exposure to Hawthorne Heights prior to the past week was primarily their 2004 debut album "The Silence In Black And White" and their 2006 follow-up "If Only You Were Lonely." Those albums went platinum and gold, respectively, and each had singles that were quite popular within the scene (Ohio Is For Lovers, Saying Sorry). I liked their mix of clean vocals and screams and their songs, for the most part, were fun and catchy. Tragically, their rhythm guitarist and unclean vocalist Casey Calvert passed away in 2007, but the band pressed on with their 2008 release "Fragile Future." Without Casey Calvert, it was quite a departure from their earlier sound and I wasn't able to get into it. I never checked out their 2010 album "Skeletons", their 2013 album "Zero", or the handful of EPs they have released since 2008.

When I was assigned Zero, I was interested to see whether they returned to their roots or if they continued the path that they had started with Fragile Future. I suppose that the answer here is a bit of both. Micah Carli, who had been their lead guitarist since the inception of the band, took over the unclean vocals. Screaming is only really present on a few tracks here, which could be a good thing or a bad thing depending on your preference. The music overall is catchy, but there were some tracks where I found vocalist JT Woodruff's delivery to be a bit grating.

This album, by all accounts, is a concept album dealing with life issues against a dystopian, war-ravaged backdrop (credit to Wikipedia there), but to be quite honest, I would not have picked up on that without having prior knowledge. There are three interlude tracks that I suppose tie the album together enough to make it a concept album.

Musically, this falls in the alternative rock/post-hardcore genre. By now, most people probably know if they like Hawthorne Heights or not. If you are someone who was turned off by the screams on the earlier Hawthorne Heights albums, you may want to consider giving this album a shot.

My favorite tracks are Zero, Put Me Back Together, and Lost In The Calm.

    ------------------

As a bonus to @WolvesAreCircling182 I checked out their 2015 EP Hurt. Overall, I liked Hurt more than Zero. It's only 8 tracks long (including an intro track), so it's a quick listen. The songs, in general, were louder and had more unclean vocals than Zero did. My favorite tracks on Hurt were Common Crook, Tail Lights, and Bury My Bones At Crystal Cove. If you are a fan of their first two albums, I'd imagine that you'd enjoy the Hurt EP very much. I've revisited the Hurt EP already, but I'm not sure that I'll revisit Zero outside of a few tracks.

I can tell a clear difference between them tbh, I think the most recent unclean vocalist from Hurt sounds closer to Casey

I was worried i would be late this week but I did it a little early! It's kinda a ridic week so I'm gonna post the recs from @Drewski before I do actually forget lol

Flying Lotus - Until The Quiet Comes. I'm gonna be honest. I have never listened to Flying Lotus because I hate the word Lotus. lotus is my moist. But I did enjoy the record. And I feel like I'm not like musically knowledgeable enough to even appreciate or articulate the things going on that I enjoyed. But I liked the way things sounded to my ears. It was very pleasant. And obv I'm always here for a Thom Yorke collab. I'll prob add the album to one of my playlists and listen again. It's kinda weird cause I don't imagine I'll ever like specifically seek out the album on its own but I can imagine I'd enjoy it coming up on a playlist? If that makes sense.

Local Natives - Gorilla Manor. I really liked this one. It's a nice lil cold weather album. It was interesting musically which I'll be honest isn't always something I notice on a record. Which sounds weird but I'm an overall vibe person so I pay attn to the emotion in the vocals and the lyrics and sometimes don't pick up on all the lil things going on but I feel like I noticed them here. The vocals sounded super familiar but idk who they reminded me of. But I even googled the singer in case I knew him from something else. I did not. I think this album I'm more likely to seek out in the future specifically.

But it was also fun cause hey I discovered a user who has similar taste to myself which is fun. I couldn't listen to the original recs cause I'd heard them, which I didn't expect when this whole idea was announced cause I'm #NotLikeThoseOtherUsers

If you liked this then definitely check out their next album Hummingbird. My personal favorite, and the song Mt. Washington always gives me chills.
