I'm also in the boat on getting excited about seeing POC (and women as well) in the punk/metal/etc scene, since it's usually a pretty white (and male)-dominated scene. That being said, I will say that I always kinda go "...huh?" if I ever hear somebody refer to those styles as "white people music" since in my experience it usually doesn't matter what ethnicity somebody is; the default response to metal and shit is often revulsion, lol.

Also, yeah, that study strikes me as totally ridic. I've always said that simplicity =/= lack of quality and I'll say it again here.

It's surprising to me how much people here like My Chemical Romance. I always used to make fun of them in high school and didn't realize how popular they actually were

Not that i ever really listened to them or have a current opinion on them

I've never heard of "white people music", but that's a ridiculous classification.

Haha I made fun of them in middle school when I hadn't even listened to them, cause it was the thing to do. Once I gave them a try I really liked them though.

Speaking of people of color in hard rock and metal, anyone familiar with Unlocking the Truth? Saw them open up for Queens of the Stone Age in 2014 and it's a band of three young teenage black kids and they fucking rock.

Ah yes of course, I remember hearing about Unlocking The Truth! They were kind of a big deal since they were an all-black metal band that were gaining a lot of ground - I've yet to listen to their stuff but I should defs fix that.

Their debut album comes out later this year. Not sure of an exact release date yet though.

I will definitely have to put that on my To-Listen list when it drops, then. Thanks for the reminder on that one.

My "check out later" list for... Everything is gargantuan. TV, movies, music, books, everything. And when I have free time I naturally spend it binging Youtube and browsing Tumblr, Facebook, Reddit, etc.

    I'm not very productive.

SAme... so many shows and and so much music to catch up on, but in my free time I end up just rewatching The Office for the billionth time.

Finest Quality Crappy Punk Rock Since '92 Prestigious

Here's a far less poorly worded (but almost certainly a poor life choice) unpopular opinion:

I really like Five Finger Death Punch, and I don't know why. They have super corny, goofy lyrics, most of their songs sound exactly the same, and they're mostly paint by numbers butt rock, but man, if they don't put a smile on my face. I can't really explain it, since most similar stuff doesn't appeal to me at all.

I don't like FFDP at all haha. I do like some similar-ish bands that aren't popular on here though: Three Days Grace, Breaking Benjamin, Papa Roach, etc.

I dig some 3DG as well.

I never listened to FFDP extensively but they're alright.

I have a playlist I listen to while going to bed. There's a significant amount of Creed and three doors down on it.

And I'm pretty sure there's video of me doing "arms wide open" karaoke somewhere.

Fun fact: when I was a young musically sheltered lad I dubbed anything with screaming as "screamo". I remember listening to "Which to Bury; Us or the Hatchet?" by Relient K and telling my friend I didn't like it because it was screamo. She laughed at me later on for this and I said I grew up and even told her I loved Underoath. Of course, I was joking because I would NEVER love Underoath! Underoath was the epitome of gross screamo music in my mind.

Then I listened to Define the Great Line and had to reevaluate my life. I never used the term "screamo" again because I always used it negatively and to this day I only hear people use the term negatively. I also feel like it dumbs down the band that's been labeled as such and implies there's nothing more to the band than screaming. Which really sucks because for a lot of bands it's not even the main attraction.

You must fix your heart Supporter

I've found that most of the people who make fun of MCR haven't really listened to them. Makes it easy for me to know who to ignore/disregard.

Screamo is a very real genre of music that sounds absolutely nothing like Underoath. The term has just been ruined by people using it as a catch all

I always thought that MCR would have been taken a lot more seriously as a legitimately talented rock band if it hadn't been for the costumes and theatrics. I think that really put them in a corner.
