It was like $240 bundled with some lowend monitors I can probably pawn off for $50 on craigslist. Not an earth shattering deal, but I'd been thinking about a turntable for a few months anyway and the 120 seems like the obvious entry level choice. I think/hope I'll be happy enough with it if I can find a brighter preamp on the cheap.

I’m so far really happy with mine (had it for about a year now) so hopefully you’ll be happier with yours once you find your preamp.

 

@christsizedshoes Some people have taken out their internal preamp per r/Vinyl and YouTube videos. Is it really worth that effort? I don't know, but some have taken the time to do that. You can upgrade the cartridge to something like the Ortofon 2M Red and use the phono input on a preamp you select. A lot of people use this entry level preamp with their turntable and love it. Worth checking out. Also worth looking in your area to see if there are any vintage electronics stores and seeing if they have any preamps with a phono input too. I wouldn't give up yet ha

Yeah, I actually had already seen the hubbub in audiophile circles over physically cutting out the internal preamp before I bought the 120. I just didn't think when they said it was on the dark side with muted treble that it would be quite this extreme. I'm leaning toward trying that DJ Pro and seeing how it does without the turntable surgery first, and then considering that as a last resort (hate to void the warranty so early, though).

I guess the stock cartridge (AT95E?) might have a dark/warm characteristic, too, but I really don't want to mess with that yet. Here I was, stupid enough to think I could just dabble in vinyl without starting down this rabbit hole...

 

@christsizedshoes haha! I know, vinyl is just an endless pit where all of your money just goes away ha. Honestly tho, it's kinda nice that there are so many options out there (but I find it can get confusing/technical sometimes). I hope it works out to your liking

 

Reading other people talk about vinyl like this on r/vinyl makes me feel like a neanderthal.

 

Has anybody ever had any trouble ordering vinyl from Kings Road Merch? Been trying to get in contact with them cause I still haven't gotten the Touché Amoré live on BBC Radio 1 Vol 3 that apparently shipped early October and haven't had any luck.

 

I've had issues with them every time and now actively avoid purchasing from them. I've never not gotten the product, condition is fine and everything, but they take forever and their customer service isn't good.

 

Kings Road has always been good to me, but they also ship only 30 miles away from me so it would be really hard to fuck that up.

 

Kinda glad I stayed away from this thread this past weekend. Would have wanted to spend money I shouldn't

Blows my mind that in my house right now I have a copies of Hiding Inside The Horrible Weather and of Pollyanna. I legit never thought I'd own either one. 2017 was kind to me with my vinyl wishlist

2017 was good vinyl wise.

 

I’m doing a December vinyl challenge and Hiding Inside The Horrible Weather is my choice for “record you never thought you’d own”. It’s such a good feeling.

 

Not that I have Alchemy Index ordered my next big want is the The Last of Us soundtrack that I passed up when they first went on sale. And it is very pricey on discogs :/
