I can't even begin to understand why people are having such a hard time with this.

This is the unpopular opinions thread. I'm not expecting everyone, or even anyone, to agree with me, but I've also never heard a deathcore song I've ever liked and can't imagine ever doing so.

Is it a problem because it's rap/hip hop in question?

Deathcore is pretty niche by comparison

Some of y'all are taking what @OhTheWater said to an extreme. I didn't take music is the most important thing in a relationship from that post.

It was one example. I'm sure I could come up with plenty. A lot of people would probably describe my tastes in music as pretty limited, and that's perfectly fine, and likely true. It's what appeals to me. I'm not going out of my way to avoid genres of music. If someone recommends something to me, I will listen to it. I've just yet to ever discover a hip hop song I want to come back to, and honestly, I wish that weren't the case.

I mean, a genre that was created by POC to express themselves and the only thing you like that even comes close is made by two white guys. Kind of comes across poorly, sorry if that upsets you. Just baffling.

Lol yeah it just seems like hating something that your close friends/significant other really love would cause issues, regardless of how much/little it means to you

It doesn't upset me, it's just not a race thing. Nothing I said had implications of race. I always hate it when people make things about something it isn't. I don't like the genre because I don't like it, not because I'm racist or anything like that. I'm just gonna echo @Brandon Allin and say I do not understand why people are having such a hard time with this. My taste just doesn't include anything from a couple genres, like, it's okay.

Also, if you're open to finding something you might actually enjoy in a genre, such as hip hop, maybe don't say you "loathe" the genre in the first place. Two entirely different comments to make.

    Just a concept.

  10. hip hop as a genre is inherently tied to race, it's not a stretch at all to consider racial implications of people "loathing" an genre that exists as an expression of racialized existence

I think loathe was a weird word to use because later when you elaborated, it seemed like you were just expressing indifference.

You might have a point about it being hip hop though. There are some users on here that are so used to defending hip hop from many of its strange, racially motivated criticisms that they're quick to defend the genre in general. I dont necessarily think that's wrong, I see where they're coming from. But if you had mentioned pop punk instead of hip hop in your post, I'm not sure we'd be having the same conversation right now.

Yeah I definitely didn't either...I'm surprised some are reading that into it

im just saying it comes across poorly, im not calling you a racist. dont put words in my mouth. you guys said you loathe a genre thats tied to a certain race and you said the only thing you like that comes close to that genre is made by two white guys. that comes across poorly, sorry to burst your bubble. i like you, weve had good conversations and im not at all attacking you or the other guy. im just letting you know how it looks from an outside perspective.

I think part of it that a lot of people are dismissive of rap and say things like "that's not real music" which is silly

Right, which was my point about people being quick to defend it. Brandon didn't say that, but I still think "loathe" was stronger than he meant and started a lot of the backlash he's getting

Whether it was intended or not, saying you loathe a genre, or that the only aspect of it you moderately enjoy is made by two white guys, will come across poorly. You may not have been aware, but now you are. It is insensitive and dismissive.

For real though, if we're talking things we loathe... twenty one pilots is near the top of my list

Sensing a little snark, which seems entirely unnecessary, but moving on.

I can't have loathed everything I've heard and still be open to hearing more? Was the problem with the post not tacking the words "that I've heard" on the end of it?

    If so, my bad.

Oh, come on. I have absolutely no issue with the people creating the music or the existence of the music itself. I simply do not like the sounds at all. This applies to hip hop made by people of any race. I couldn't even begin to tell you the color of the skin of most rappers I've heard, aside from the obvious mainstream artists everyone knows.

You're combining two separate posts made by different people. I have no idea who the white guys in question even are.

Some of you are taking this too far though, and I'm not sure how continuing to come at people is going to help them open up to genres they already have reservations about

That's why I separated the ideas by saying "or." I just wanted to make it into one post because the end response from me would be the same.

I guess I can see that. I guess I more just wanted to make it clear that's not what I intended. haha I've been super jumpy lately (getting off meds kinda killed me the past few months) so I basically feel the need to apologize to everyone I speak to on here right now. So, sorry. Didn't mean anything in a negative or dismissive way, just have really shitty people skills. haha
