It’s honestly astounding where Nintendo is at right now and how far they’ve come this calendar year. I mean, it was just back in early 2016 that they were being basically written off seemingly for good, and now look where we are. Switch is a smashing sales success with an improbably beloved year of first-party exclusives under its belt, blowing Microsoft and Sony’s meager first-party year out of the water (aside from Horizon on PS4, of course). And now Xenoblade is getting raves as well just to close out the year on a high note. It’s just insane.

I'm interested but have not really played any JRPG style games, except Golden Sun and Chrono Trigger.

Xenoblade plays a lot more like an offline MMO than a traditional turn-based JRPG like those classics. Also it has a ton of Western-style open-world side questing thrown in, as opposed to following a mostly linear story with a few minor diversions. It’s a real hybrid of MMO, WRPG, and JRPG that sets itself apart from most everything else on the market. If you’re an RPG fan at all I’d suggest giving it a look. Watch some gameplay on YouTube and read some reviews!

also that video spyki posted says that the tutorial for the combat system is pretty good. XCX tutorials were so bad.

And some quality of life features like, important people having a star above them so you don’t have to talk to everyone in the town for fear of losing quests

It’s funny, a lot of the complaints, even in positive reviews, have been that the systems aren’t well-explained, including the combat. So much conflicting information, but that average score is so high that it must be fine in the final balance.

To be fair people that wrote of Nintendo had no idea what they were talking about

Yeah. The way the video explains it makes me believe that it’s going to be a better transition than when I played XCX.

Also how dumb is it that I thought November had a 31? I’ll be getting the game in roughly 12 hours instead of 36.

    Such a good feeling.

I struggled at times with XC1's combat, some of the attributes and stuff weren't explained well, but I got through it

Only MMO I really spent any substantial time with was Elders Scrolls Online and loved it. The more RPG aspects, like the side questing and not super linear story have me interested. I'm definitely going to watch some reviews and videos. This is why I love Nintendo right now though, usually I would never think twice about a game like this and just pass on it but here we are.

I also just want a huge world to explore again, I adored Mario but it didn't scratch the itch I was looking for.

If nothing else, this will be that. The original really pushed the boundaries of what the Wii could do in terms of world size and detail, and X did the same for the Wii U, so I’m expecting this to do the same for Switch. These are real “play them on a big screen” kinds of games.

30 hours into X you'll be given a bipedal mech you can use for combat/travelling/flying and even riding that the game was still massive. I wouldn't expect that level from XC2 but it would probably be more dense and have more to do for each area.

Monolith can really make those massive maps. No wonder they were asked to help make Hyrule.

What kind of updates are you looking for? The gameplay is improved, especially after they resolved the shooting and stealing.
