The guy has made three posts. And one of them was a question. I think you're writing him off too quickly and robbing him of a chance for growth.

There's a difference between being hurt and angry at a woman you loved and telling her to "suck on the end of this dick that cums lead."

im not saying this user in particular just in general. a lot of us are tired. google is a thing. there are countless resources. youre right, its worth educating somewhat in spite of all of that and sometimes interaction is the best course for progression. ive learned quite a bit from other users on this site, but i wasnt immediately deflective.

see the post above, this is only going to get worse

Nope. That's pretty much the raw shot of the anger you mentioned and yes, it's ugly. These things always are.

Goddamnit, I leave for a few hours, come back to like 4 new pages, and thought it leaked.

You have a point, and some of the pushback you're getting feels like piling on and groupthink...

    BUT

The problem is the EYEWTKAS lyrics go further than just anger. There are slurs and insinuations of violence in multiple songs. I'm generally open minded and more on the side of what you're articulating here, but that stuff really crosses a line.

Now, I don't agree with the apparent consensus that you're an irredeemable POS if you so much as listen to the record or fail to completely disavow it of any musical value. But at the end of the day, there's very good reason Daryl has articulated regret for, e.g., the worst lines in "Lovebites."

There's more to faith than just religious faith.

I have faith that people can learn. People can grow.

okay bc I don’t actually trust anyone to legitimately do this I’m just gonna say

Hey @Vesanic I totally understand where you’re coming from, like genuinely. I do think you’re experiencing some cognitive dissonance in regards to this album, though. Which, I’ll be honest, I grappled with that in the case of this particular album for a long time! EYEWTKAS is, in every other regard, my favorite GJ release. For a long time, when I was younger and less experienced/knowledgeable in these kinds of issues, I was able to pass it off as him just being very passionately mad at ONE woman in particular. I used every excuse imaginable to pardon the lyrical content (she cheated on him, he was sick, etc.), partly bc my love for the album clouded my judgment, but also bc I didn’t realize that there’s no way for his words to be justified.

If we’re being honest with ourselves, the hateful/violent/misogynistic/sexist lyrics on the album did not only impact the woman that Daryl was directing it at (not that it would be okay if that were the case either). How many men do you think listen/listened to this album and felt emboldened in hearing these words and appropriated them to be used against the women in their lives? How many women do you think listened to this album and internalized the misogynystic language? You can’t just put these things in a vacuum, y’know? To try and excuse these words is to say, in some capacity, misogyny is okay. If you’re young and don’t know better, if you’re really upset or angry, if a woman has hurt you, if you’re sick, whatever the case may be. It’s not though, and it takes most folks time to unlearn the shitty things drilled into our brains from early ages.

I’ve held a lot of beliefs and have said and done a lot of things that I know now to be unacceptable and shitty. Pretty much everyone has. It’s unfortunate, and hopefully one day as a society we’ll grow to the point where we don’t learn and internalize and reproduce hurtful, hateful, and disgusting stuff and we don’t have to go to lengths to right those wrongs, but that’s our reality. Right now there’s a great change/realization happening as a culture and we’re all learning and evolving, some people are further ahead in that process than others and I think it’s important to exercise patience when it’s due. I think it’s very hard to do so when you’ve had the same conversations time and time again, especially when you’re part of the marginalized group in question... it’s hard to remember that not everyone is going to have learned (or, more accurately, unlearned) the things you did long ago. Which is probably why convos like this get so hostile so quickly, we can’t allow these things to go unchallenged, or be engaged with uncritically, and when someone does so it’s easy to assume they’re just a person who doesn’t care about being part of changing things for the better and denouncing social injustice in all it’s forms. Some people are genuinely like that, a lot of people actually, and we have to deal with those kinds of people so often that it’s hard to tell the difference.

Idk if I’m really making any sense and I’m probably being too long-winded. But ultimately what I’m trying to say is that Daryl is doing the right thing by continuing to note that he was in the wrong for those lyrics, especially if they’re still currently performing the songs live. He’s grown and he probably wants others to grow too and thinks it’ll help them if he brings his past mistakes to light.
