Everybody should listen to the Breeders discography. I’m very close to preferring them to the Pixies outright, as blasphemous as that sounds

also yep this year has been hugely exploratory in terms of music listening for me, so I’m very excited to hopefully throw people some curveballs

    Round 1 Report!

@Colin Your Enthusiasm had me listen to:
The Glorious Sons - Young Beauties and Fools

I immediately enjoyed this album and my first thought was that the band sounds like Mumford and Sons if they were good. But there's a little more to it then that. The pop/americana/folk production mixed with decidedly un-pop lyrics on some tracks make a great juxtaposition and give the music more depth than might appear at first glance.

My Blood is a stand-out track for me. It features pretty much the direction I was hoping American Authors would head after their promising debut EP. Sawed Off Shotgun is also a super fun song. I'm looking forward to playing this album for my friends!

  16. Round 1 report:

@marioeatworld had me listen to Pinback's album Autumn of the Seraphs.

It was great! I have had Pinback's song "Loro" in my library for yeeeears but had never sat and listened to full album of theirs before.

Autumn of the Seraphs reminds me a LOT of early Modest Mouse. And it's great! It's a very great autumn album, hence why he gave me this one to listen to.

This makes me want to check out more of Pinback's discography!

    Round 1. I matched with @BTDandFeelingThis

I got Page Avenue by Story of the Year and Hurt by Hawthorne Heights. I'll be lumping the reviews together because I have the exact same opinions on both.

Overall, neither were quite my thing. I was hoping they would be since I love discovering artists I hadn't heard before, and because Kevo is a cool dude. I just was never really into any of the heavier moments and while I did appreciate some of the cool cleaner lead guitar parts, it's just not my style of music. I don't want to sound like a dick here, but I probably would have liked these albums better if I had discovered them before I was 16. I can see the appeal, but it's hard to get into when my taste has changed so much in the past several years.

  21. @js977 was my partner for round 1, and he recommended two completely different albums. My thoughts:

Iron & Wine - Beast Epic
I had only heard one other song by Iron & Wine before I listened to this. I wasn't expecting such a subdued listen, but that's okay! Beast Epic primarily consists of Samuel's comforting vocals and an acoustic guitar. Lyrics seem to mainly be about relationships and love - I need to explore further. I love City And Colour and this album reminded me of Dallas' early work. A lovely, soothing listen. I love hearing Samuel harmonise with himself, particularly in my favourite track Call It Dreaming.

    White Lung - Paradise
This is a really fun album. I can't believe I missed it last year. Short and sweet runtime (28 minutes), and easy to listen to on repeat. I love Mish Way-Barber's vocals, she sounds a lot like Lady Gaga which is awesome! Pretty good mix of punk rock with a bit of pop-metal thrown in. Very melodic guitar lines. "Below" is the ideal rock song, takes me back to when I was hearing AFI, 30 Seconds To Mars etc. as a teenager, but fronted by a badass woman. I can't wait to check out the rest of their discography!
