In all seriousness, I adored the first 2 Billy Talent records when they came out but I also think that the music feels a little trapped in adolescence.

 

I could never get past the dude from Billy Talent's voice, I'm assuming his name isn't Billy but in my mind Billy has a grating voice

 

Hey people, been sort of MIA for a few days, but I am here now. My thoughts on @Fuck You Aurora's recommendations:

Dan Andriano in the Emergency Room - Hurricane Season
So to start, I have to admit that at first click I wasn't aware that Dan was somebody I had been listening to for years in Alkaline Trio. I only ever knew Skiba by name, so that was a pleasant surprise given I love 2 of Alkaline Trio's albums. This album really truly surprised me at how much I enjoyed it. He works very well as a solo artist, his voice gives off a real feel of honesty and desperation at times on the album, while never really touching too close in similarity to Alkaline Trio's sound. Lyrically, the whole thing was right up my ally. This gets a 9/10

Matt Skiba And The Sekrets - Babylon
This album, though a lot of fun and well-written in the same vein of most of Skiba's work, felt as though I was revisiting many tropes of Skiba that I was already familiar with. I knew that I had at least heard of this project and maybe a single here and there, but I wasn't familiar enough to know that it really felt like Skiba sort of killing time until his Alkaline Trio made its comeback. It by no means was a bad record, even surprising me with some more laid back approaches to songs i'm not used to with him. Though, I felt as though the qualities I liked most were ones I found in Alkaline Trio Already. 6.5/10

 

Ok. So @Joe4th had me listen to now now - threads. It is the soul crushing melancholy vibes I enjoy for fall/winter so it was great timing. The instrumentation in Magnet had me tapping along to my steering wheel which I didn't expect from this album since it originally struck me as more low-key but it still has those thrilling moments that keep me hooked. I think But I Do and School Friends were my fave. Can't wait to drown into my own misery with them as my soundtrack lol. Def gonna be a fall/winter staple! Thanks for reccing it!

 

My partner was @mattfreaksmeout. Here are their recommendations for me and my thoughts:

Bad Bad Hats - Psychic Reader
This was a cool little album! The entire time I was listening I realized it felt very familiar. I'm not sure if I've somehow heard it before and just don't remember, or if it's just the band's influences rubbing off on me to create that sense of familiarity. I really enjoy the vocalist. She has a wonderful voice and can craft some great pop melodies. I really appreciated the album's blend of straightforward pop songwriting with some grungier moments. I also was impressed by the production on this record; it sounds fantastic. I'd say my initial standout tracks were Midway, Shame, Things We Never Say, and the title track. I can absolutely imagine myself returning to this record in the future. It hits that sweet spot of indie rock catchiness and depth that I really love.

Paul Simon - Graceland
I'd obviously heard of Paul Simon before listening to this record, but I'd never really experienced his music outside of a few standard S&G songs. If I'm being honest, this album was kind of underwhelming for me. That being said, I can tell an immense amount of care went into crafting the record. There are some very interesting arrangements going on here, and I enjoyed hearing instruments and vocal styles that aren't typically associated with this style of music. I also have to give Simon mad props for his lyricism as there is some great descriptive writing on the album. Unfortunately, I just didn't find the melodies to be particularly grabbing or the songs particularly engaging. I'd love to try again sometime as I can imagine this record being a grower, but my first impression wasn't as great as I was hoping for. Still, I'm glad to have heard it.

I listened to All That Remains- The Fall of Ideals as recommended by @Raditz

I thought it was a solid record reminiscent of Killswitch Engage. I thought as far as this genre goes that they were much more creative with their melodies and guitar work. As a guitar player myself a lot of the parts were fun. The only song I wasn't a big fan of was "The Weak Willed"

My favorite tracks were "This Calling" "It Dwells In Me" and "Indictment"

 

Time for my thoughts on the two albums @nohandstoholdonto recommended for me. Thank you for the recommendations!

First up is Tears for Fears - Songs from the Big Chair: I knew from the start that I would enjoy this album as I already knew and liked Shout and Everybody Wants to Rule the World. My favourite part of the album was the first 4 songs. I enjoy when tracks have synths in them and there's nothing better than an 80's album for that. There was a lot going on instrumentally with saxophone thrown in during certain songs like The Working Hour. The only track I didn't really enjoy was Listen. Overall, the songs I see myself going back to outside of the two I already knew are Head Over Heels, Working Hour and Mothers Talk.

Second album was Japanese Breakfast - Soft Sounds From Another Planet: Now this I had never heard of before. I think I didn't listen to it in the right setting, because I mostly listen to music in the car and this sounded more like an album I would put in the background at home or on headphones. Musically it was great and the singer has a nice voice. I think I have a lesser chance of going back to it in the future for the reason I stated above, but there were still some tracks that stood out like Boyish and This House. It was still an enjoyable listen.

 

I listened to the Dirty Projectors s/t that @Drewski recommended

of course I'd enjoy an album where Dawn Richard sings a song co-written by Solange
I don't have a standout track or song I really enjoyed but overall it was my kind of music
pretty sure I had only heard the first single before listening

 

For the second session, on the behalf of @Larry David I'll be listening to The Hotelier- Home Like Noplace There Is

On my behalf he'll be listening to the Struts- Everybody Wants

 

For what it’s worth, the Japanese Breakfast album is definitely a grower and I think as I slowly picked up on the lyrics the melodies became even more infectious to me. Most of my listenings of it have been done while driving around at night. Really glad you ended up enjoying something about the picks tho!!

 

That Hotelier album is phenomenal.

Released in February, I continued to find moments on this album that floored me month after month.
