But if you're going to literally jump down my throat like this?

The last two weeks have made this place turn into the worst of AP.net.

 

People are jumping down your throat because you’ve refused to apologize for accusing someone that was a victim as being an abuser and keep doubling down on it in an extremely weird way

 

You deserve to have people jump down your throat. If this is what you're gonna bring to the site then don't let the door hit you on the way out.

as a general reminder, this is a topic you can easily educate yourself on, for free via the world wide web, before having a take on it. really. it won't kill you to spend ten minutes learning before commenting. going and doing some research on trauma and abuse before going on about it on a forum like it's a spectator sport is much preferred.

I just wanna point out that if your conclusion was correct, you'd still be in the wrong for immediately jumping to that conclusion in the first place. That's why people are angry with you. If someone makes a FB post implying they were abused, making those kinds of conclusions will not help. Even if it turns out the person making said post is an abuser. All you were doing was making an attempt to get ahead of everyone else so you can later say "i told you so", and you were using the smokescreen of caring about the victims in order to do it.

 

You caught me, I'm not kind to people who make life harder for those who struggle with mental illness and/or are victims of abuse.

 

Definitely agree about the site as a whole. It seems like people are very "anti pop-punk" even though only one of the recently outed abusers was in a pop-punk band. Genre shouldn't influence your thinking in that respect.

 

Yeah there's definitely a sense of taking pleasure in abusers being outed to validate your musical tastes instead of wanting it to happen to make the scene safer, and that sucks.

I do have a lot of hope for the upcoming generation of fans though. The difference between the comments for this post and for BN's is absolutely staggering. Very few jokes or rude comments, tons of people offering support and mentioning outlets for fans who may be feeling the same way, it's really just night and day. I know they have the same problems with worshipping bands that we did but I feel like these kids are much more in tune with bands being people and existing outside of their music. It was the same when Bren took a break and later when MoBo broke up or when others have taken time away and kept people in the loop. It's so much healthier overall.

 

Even on reddit if you’re comparing r/poppunkers and r/Brandnew. The younger generation on poppunkers is handling it way more appropriately.

 

It's a testament to the concerted effort to change the culture that's been going on here and all around the internet over the last couple of years. You're still gonna see younger fans passionately defending people like Brand New, Front Porch Step, Neck Deep, or Moose Blood but I feel like the amount of support victims receive these days is more than ever before and only getting stronger. The recent Hollywood accusations all being taken so seriously have definitely helped as well. Still a lot of work to do but, yeah, it does appear to be getting better.

 

Does anyone think there will be a man to come forward to say he has been sexually abused by a female in the near future?

uhh in wider society yes men are victims of sexual assault. in the scene its less likely because its a male dominated scene where men hold the vast majority of the power

 

It's possible but really unlikely just given the ratio and power dynamics.

 

It just feels useless to speculate to me. We should work to prevent abuse and we should react appropriately when someone reports abuse, but I don't see the point in speculating about potential abuse that has occurred, and I actually find it pretty gross - whether it's about specific bands or whether it's about a potential situation. This isn't a game or a tv show for you to try to guess the ending to.
