Fuck it let’s burn the whole fucking thing down and start over with the new bands that are socially conscious and the old bands that were good people. Eff everyone else

Not that it makes it any less creepy, but glancing over that it looks like she was 17 at the time it all happened. Across Europe, the age of consent is lower- most places 16. Still absolutely abusive and a gross misuse of the fan- idol power dynamic though. This to me epitomises that we need to emphasize that while age is a big deal, that abuse of power isn't inexcusable the moment the recipient turns of age.

I had to step away for a little bit. Looks like this has only gotten worse. I don’t have time to read all the pages I missed. Anyone care to catch me up?

there's bound to be more. looking back, the emo scene was full of young impressionable girls with a lot of dudes in power. especially with myspace and the easily accessible private messages. when i was 14-15, i would message dudes asking if they wanted booze in exchange for a guestlist and i didn't realize how creepy it was for a dude in their 20s to invite these girls to their bus. i dont know, there's has to be a lot of girls out there who still feel like they were in the wrong and are sitting in pain and silence. i'm just gutted tbh.

I don't know where you stepped out, but the TL;DR version is that he released a statement (news post on the front page about this) that left A LOT to be desired, and more, similar accounts have come out about what he did to other girls.

And, now, other victims are speaking out about their experiences with other abusive men in this scene.

Can you give me a TL/DR version? Tumblr is blocked at my work so I can't read the stuff Jason linked.

I’m still in a daze with this whole thing. I’ve felt numb since the news broke on Friday. I keep hoping it’s a bad dream. I feel guilt for investing so much of my life on this band. Literally have traveled the country several times to see them live, spent hundreds on vinyl, merch, concert tickets, etc. WANTED TO NAME MY DAUGHETER LACEY (thank god, we didn't)...Over the past 15 years I'd tell anyone who will listen to me that they're the greatest band on earth and how much they've meant to me. Now I feel ashamed, like, I now expect friends to look at me and be like THIS was your favorite band? Sicko. My wife doesn't follow the same music I do, I felt guilty/ashamed to tell her about this.

Obviously, my feelings are nothing compared to the victims, whose lives are (and have been) ruined. I hope they can find solace and peace.

Levelling everyone else to Jesse Lacey's vile behavior is simply the biggest mistake that anyone that has ever followed this scene could possibly make. It's our duty not allow Lacey's legacy be that our vision from all the bands that surfaced in that scene to become tarnished because Brand New's whole narrative blew up. The way I see it, not all of them were going out of their way to prey upon minors. Brian Diaz post where this blow up is now set to private, but for example, the same woman that denounced Jesse first talked with the wife of someone from TBS on that post, about how Adam and the TBS gang (she met Lacey for the first time in a BN/TBS show back in '02) were the ones that send her out of the backstage just a moment after Lacey asked her contact to "get the pictures that she took of them" because they realized that she was underage. Other overage girls stayed behind, by her own words.

Seeing recollections of others fans and my own recollection of my personal experience with some of these bands, Taking Back Sunday and Circa Survive included, I think that before they were married they did get around with a lot of fans. Now, brooming and taking advantage of underage kids when you could literally have dated with any other adult person that would be able to consent and not fall for your bullshit, like Jesse did with at least 3 accusers that came forward is just not the same. Rape and preying upon minors is a crime, rock stars sleeping around with consenting adults is well, life.

We can't picture a whole scene in broad strokes because Lacey's vile acts. There's a reason why he was seen as problematic and this clearly was an "open secret" by people within the scene. Would I put my hand in the fire for anyone? No. But levelling everyone by Lacey's conduct seems completely wrong to me.

Without sounding disrespectful to the victims, this wasn’t how I wanted (one of my favourite bands) them to go out.

I haven't told my wife about it yet because I was still (am still?) sorting out my thoughts and feelings on the whole thing, and wanted to have a full picture, which I think I've now gotten.

Does anyone have a link to the best/most thorough story about this? One that compiles all of the victims' accounts and/or has some insightful commentary?

There have been enough disgusting things in this scene that I'm willing to write off large portions of it.

    Thanks.

I did see his statement, which I had some issues with.

I have seen one other account through twitter. How many more have there been?

What other bands have been impacted?

I see Kevin made a statement. I can probably google that.

Just talked to an old high school friend of mine who used to be the biggest Brand New fan that I knew. I was afraid that he was going to side with the people defending the band and attacking the victims, but he is disgusted by Jesse's actions thankfully and no longer considers them his favorite band. It's good to see someone I know take the right stance.

I’m really worried that many bands in the future are just going to cut off the one member with allegations, get praised, and then fans ignore the fact that they may have known or been complicit.

This was a really good piece that focuses on what's going on in Hollywood, but I think a lot of it could be applied to music and this "scene" too.

    Yes, you're misreading it

I meant in the sense that I have no interest in explaining away or reading people's justifications about Jesse Lacey - A singer in a band I never particularly cared about

However, I am a very big fan of Kevin Devine - and feel sorry for the situation he finds himself in.

Of course - In the larger scale, I'm very sorry for all the women who have been involved in the swathe of sexual harassment cases that we are only recently coming to hear about - I don't know the specifics of the Lacey situation but will read up on it
