The courage of these victims to come forward is so admirable but also so heartbreaking.

I'm sorry you had to endure this for so long

i'm not going to persecute jesse because there's still no evidence, confirmation, denial etc. but i'm not going to dismiss the victim coz it took a lot of bravery to tell her story if this was true. just noted that it was very convenient though that brian posted that and automatically a girl comes out BUT fuck jesse if he did this good thing i can separate art from the man.

is it wrong to still love brand new even if this comes out as true though? sincerely asking

I brought this up with work "friends" and I was shocked and saddened when 2 of them immediately defended the abusers saying "WHERE IS THE PROOF? I BELIEVE IN INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY". It's as if they don't understand the nuance of anything.

These women are brave as hell and I hope they know there is a large percentage of people that support you.

Isn't this super similar to what Steve Klein from NFG did? They immediately kicked him out and basically pretended he never existed, though doing that to a rhythm guitarist is definitely easier than the lead singer and songwriter of the band (yes I know Steve wrote lyrics but it's NFG). Honestly very curious to see how the rest of the band will react to this, and if they knew already or not. Either way I hope this story being out is a burden off the victim and that she can maybe finally begin to be at peace with the situation.

I just got into them this year and was hoping to catch them on their farewell tour next year but that's not happening anymore. I can't imagine what some of you must be going through, if some shit like this ever came out about Mark Hoppus or especially Billie Joe Armstrong I don't know what I would do with myself

That woman has been telling her story for over a year. It’s never “convenient” to relive your trauma and tell people about it. This is a bad take.

As it’s been said before - your personal line is your choice, but I personally find it hard to separate art from artist in a genre where the art is the diary, thoughts, and feelings of a predator and that shows in the lyrics. (ESP in the some Deja songs.)

Flying to London to see them on Saturday. Hmmm.

I read the book Missoula recently, which is all about sexual assaults by the football team and how they rarely ever get reported let alone prosecuted. It's hard not to believe someone when they have allegations like this. Hopefully he can make amends or do something instead of ignoring.

At this point it doesn't take away my love of Brand New's music. But who knows.

I’m not expecting to hear anything and I’ve written off KD as a result of this until we find out otherwise.

    Yes.

    That’s exactly what it was.

I don’t believe the post is deleted but made non-public again. We had real names, accusations, and the shitty meninist movement all swarming in. They had to protect everyone especially the accuser.

The extent I’m seeing people stretch their excuses to “But Sic Transit Gloria is about a woman raping a man!” is absurd.

...and Me Vs Maradona Vs Elvis is about taking advantage of a woman who is too intoxicated to give consent. The lyrics aren't clues into their damn lives. Look at rappers... it's not always life to them, sometimes it's just art.

This entire thing is toxic: Have some people forgotten Sic Transit Gloria is about a woman raping a man? • r/brandnew

I'm happy to write off Brand New after this even more than I was before on the basis that their fans are easily the most disgusting group of people I've interacted with.

sic transit is about a kid/early adult who rushes into the concept of having sex by getting into meaningless one night stand (or an early relationship) and is left shattered that it isnt the holy grail like he thought it was and was left wanting more.

lyrics like "This is the first and last time he said" and "Despite everything he learned from his friends, he doesn't seem so prepared" kind of nod to the fact that it's consensual. its not about rape at all

"He is the lamb, she is the slaughter. She's moving way too fast when all he wanted was to hold her" is the defining lyric that showcases the meaning of the song.

They arent doing backflips to protect Jesse at all. That’s literally what the song is about. Nobody in here is protecting Jesse

And that's why you always leave a note.

I’m not going to touch on the first part of your post, but to touch on your question, which will undoubtedly divide the aisle a bit but I’ve been asking myself the same thing (minus the “even if this is true” part - it’s true, there’s no reason it isn’t, get over it). A friend of mine talked me down a little and said “Enjoy the art. Don’t expect people to be good people just because they make things you like.” To many of us, Jesse was a holier than thou figure. An icon. But at the end of the day, he’s a human being with as much capability of doing something shitty as you or I.

One more thing. This “innocent until proven guilty” mentality can’t and shouldn’t apply here. For many reasons which others have stated above way more eloquently than I ever could. I stand with the victim(s) 100%, always. But (don’t attack me yet for saying but) the other 3 members of the band (4 if you count sapone), their crews, support, etc. should be considered innocent until proven complicit. This band is more than Jesse Lacey. Way more. And if it comes out they all knew, fuck em. But we’ve seen this before - the lostprophets had no idea their leader was trying to rape a damn baby. NFG has no idea Steve was a pedophile either. Sometimes you just don’t truly know people, no matter how many hours you’ve spent in a van together.

I don’t know. Been trying to find the right words but at the end of the day this is just sick. I’m disappointed, angry, but most importantly just heartbroken these people keep feeling the need to take advantage of and prey on innocent and too often YOUNG human beings. Pandora’s box has been opened. I’m sure many more stories like this will come to light before the year is over.

What are you doing? Like seriously what the hell are you doing? I don’t know if we are having some miscommunication here or what’s. I’m not defending stuff on reddit about that song at all. I am referring to @Iago who is most definitely not defending Jesse Lacey

And that's why you always leave a note.

Don’t write off KD before you hear anything. That’s a dangerous leap to make. Even your closest of friends, can you honestly say you know everything that goes on when you’re not around? No matter how close you are, it’s very rare to really, truly 100% know a person. One person did these shitty things. Blame him and him alone until we hear anything otherwise.

I'm of the opinion that you cannot separate the person from their art, especially when it comes to music. Many of Brand New's songs will only trigger me thinking that they're about incidents like this. I also try to not associate with garbage people, even as a fan, and would rather write off a band than continue listening to them.

Innocent until proven guilty doesn't apply in the court of public opinion. Anyone claiming this is a special snowflake. I'm sure there's an overlap between people who don't understand the first amendment and free speech along with that of the concept of these things only apply when the government is imposing itself on people.

It's about time the biggest name of the scene gets taken down. It was only a matter of time considering all of the other shitty people this scene harbors. The scene is toxic.
