we're all a bunch of weirdos on a quest to belong Prestigious

For me personally, I believe that people can change. I believe that once shitty people can become good people. But I also believe lots of people don’t change even though they are capable of it.

I believe the Jesse can have made some really terrible decision ten years ago that really messed up the victims lives, but can be different now and be filled with regret for what he did. I also believe he could be the same person today he was then.

I think a lot of how my relationship/attachment to this band will be going forward hinges completely on how they respond to this.

I’d love for him to do the right thing here. I’m terrified he/they won’t. Whatever happens, I hope the best for the victim. I hope she can find peace, and I hope the same for all victims. As what they are going through is drastically more important than what my attachment to Brand New is.

Damn I was literally thinking about Max Bemis earlier in relation to all this because of that song. I think that's a respectable decision.

Yeah, the rest is most definitely worth reading. I posted that when I saw it as an isolated retweet, but Max offers some important thoughts on consent, sexual dynamics, and the scene as he views it.

Well if it's any consolation, I hope she finds peace knowing that her story was final heard. To echo what others have said, this unfortunately isn't a surprise given some of their lyrical content. He's hinted at being a shitty guy in the past and we all probably ignored it for selfish reasons.

If it is guilt that incentivized their donations then is that enough to pay for the past? Certainly not. Would a statement admitting his shitty behavior? No, but it is a necessity given the scope of their importance to this scene and how they may impact the actions of the young men/bands in it. If he sees the error in his ways then he needs to hold himself accountable and set an example to maybe help raise the standard of ethics for people involved in this corner of the music industry. People can change and I hope that he has, but he needs to do the right thing.

totally unrelated: I need to check out Max's run on Moon Night

  9. Max has written/said his fair share of problematic things in the past, but to his credit, he seems to be at the forefront of members of the mid-2000s scene now consistently attempting to listen more and push for a safer, more inclusive "scene"

People can change but sexual assault crosses the line of no return for me and many others. And he did it to a 15 year old.

A lot of the band's lyrics come across much more sinister given this coming to light. I mean, fuck:

"Well this is the same logic that got us into trouble the first time
(When we discovered we could use)
The same logic to get us out of trouble
And shake off all the people we abuse"

Tough situation for his wife Andrea to be in. This really fucking sucks and I hope it's addressed by the band. Maybe not over the weekend but mid week next week before the overseas shows.

That was written by Vin though, who I'm really hoping is a good person and didn't know about any of this (but that's probably unlikely)

    not a doctor

I'm going to try to talk about this without using the word "my" because in situations such as this, anything I feel I'm losing musically and internally because of this means absolutely nothing compared to the weight of what the victim has had to live with (and continues to).

There's a sadness in feeling as if you've bought into someone's sad story. Many made Brand New's songs a cathartic exercise. The dark lyrical nature does not come out of thin air. These lyrics come from a place of truth and experiences over time.

I ache for this woman and the pain she has had to endure. I admire her courage, and long for her to find peace within herself.

As a survivor of sexual abuse, the wound is deep and unflinching. I was lucky to have been able to come to terms with what I went through, and forgive. But not everyone is granted the luxury of ever feeling that way.

To think I might have used some of these songs as catharsis without knowing the deeper meaning pains me. As if I was conned.

Again, I can't say it enough. I'm sorry to the victim, and I hope she can process this at her own pace, in her own way, free of judgement.

    The spiciest meme

I'm just worried how many people will be easy to say "oh it was over 10 years ago people change" just because it's THE Jesse Lacey of Brand New when anyone else would not get nearly that quick of a dismissal of actions.
