The cost of audible has always seemed prohibitive to me. Paying a monthly subscription and then having to buy books on top of that seems unjustifiable.

 

I know I've said it before but the library and Overdrive is great for Audiobooks.

Even if some of us have trouble using it :P

 

As a bonus for having Prime, I got a year worth of Audible for $99. Makes it like $8 a credit.

 

This is how I feel about it after getting more details. If it was just $15 a month I'd maybe be tempted. But that on top of paying for books? Yeah, I'll stick with physical copies. Works better for me.

 

There's just no getting around the fact that audiobooks are expensive. If you look at prices without the membership they cost $40+ dollars for newer audiobooks. I rarely buy any audiobooks on top of the one per month you get and if i do I it's always when they're like 5 bucks. I usually listen to books that are 20+ hours long and it takes me a month to get through. Totally fine if you aren't into audiobooks or find it too expensive, but for me, it's like less than a dollar per hour for making my commute way more enjoyable so I'm fine with spending 15 dollars a month.

Just chiming in to say if you have a library card and your library offers services like Overdrive and/or Hoopla, paying for audiobooks is practically obsolete. You'll have to wait for new audiobooks of course--but that's like anything else you get from the library. And after a few months when popularity dies down you can basically check out and listen to any audiobook as often as you want.

 

Alot still carry physical too if you're into that as well

 

Overdrive always has a wAit list on books I want. Without fail.

 

god dammit. i didn't know audible had prime free books much like prime has music and movies. hmm. i'll have to search through what's available via prime. that may change my mind about this whole deal.

 

Also if you already own an ebook bought through Amazon you’re eligible to buy the audiobook for reduced prices if you’re a prime member

 

I am a chapter into the dispossessed at the moment. I’m pretty excited to get further into it, based on the way that chapter ended

 

So I'm finally reading Alan Moore's Jerusalem. I've had it since it came out but been too terrified to crack it open. The first book is madness, I'm pretty sure I went insane while reading it. Actually feeling way more comfortable in the second book with it's ridiculously complex cosmic odyssey. I usually don't take breaks in the middle of books but Strange Weather comes out Tuesday and I will not have it finished by then.

 

Started the new John Green book. It's exactly what you would expect from the new John Green book

I am enjoying it though

 

okay, really starting to like Audible / audiobooks. been able to get a lot done today while blazing through Dracula. pretty cool that i can do laundry / clean / grocery shop / run errands and "read" a book at the same time.

thinking i may keep Audible at least for November so i can use my credit on Infinite Jest. tried to read that monstrosity last year and had to stop after not being able to even pronounce every fifth fucking word. very curious how it comes through via audio. and since the audiobook is like $70, might as well call it a "deal" to get it for $15.

 

Just picked up Strange Weather from the library this weekend. It should be my next book to read after I'm done with Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz.

These stories sound pretty different than his previous stuff (although I haven't actually read any of his previous novels).

 

Finished The Stand yesterday (finally) and now I'm working on Bonfire by Krysten Ritter, which is out 11/7. I'll be writing a review for that and Artemis by Andy Weir soon.

 

Nice! I haven't started yet, decided to finish this Alan Moore monster instead. I read the plots for each of the novellas and they sound soooo good. Especially Nails and the one about the "hero" with the gun, really interested to see where that goes. Just judging from the descriptions they don't sound too out of the ordinary from his short story writing style. His collection 20th Century Ghosts has a lot of stories like that. Did you notice the 2 Gabriel Rodriguez illustrations? They're so good.

 

Hellll yeah. Glad to hear you liked the Stand. I saw your update about Ritters book and went to immediately buy it on Amazon and was sad to see it wasn't out yet. I'll be interested to read your review.

 

Nice! It's good so far, but I'm only a few chapters in right now. I plan to read more of it today and tomorrow for sure. It should be a much quicker read than The Stand. Then again, most books are I think haha.

 

Lol, that's how I feel about Jerusaleum, as soon as I finish that life will be easy again.

 

I bet haha. I'm looking forward to King's other books but the stretch that starts with The Talisman is going to be brutal. I still have a handful before I even get there, though.

 

Looking at his bibliography now, yeah you've definitely got some fun before you get there. Definitely Rec reading Long Walk asap. Lots of dense, cocaine and alcohol fueled stuff in that brutal section you're talking about but dammit if it's not all incredible, haha. Needful Things, Dolores Claiborne, and Rose Madder are just a few underappreciated ones you'll love.

Are you reading Bachman books? You didn't read Rage, right?

 

The Long Walk is so damn great.

 

I do plan on reading them, but haven't read any yet. My mom has the compilation that Rage is in, but since I'm going in order that'll be a while still, too.
