Bruh the National got 8.0 and a glowing review, that was not a pan by any definition

but it was their first full length in a decade to not get BNM
grizzly bear's review was glowing but the last two got 9+s BNM
it's definitely a pan for these sort of artists that are shoe ins for BNMs to not get it, means that pitchfork doesn't consider them an essential and defining act of their coverage anymore

i'm using pan in a different sense than you are, i don't mean a negative review or a low score, i just mean it in a relative sense.

I know what you're saying and you're on to something that I agree with. tbh I think p4k has been on some overall weirder tha usual shit this year. Like the low number of BNT, 8.1 BNM for Migos, other rando stuff.

Sorry to all who don't care abt this but I am with Casey and do find this stuff halfway fascinating.

see something like the 8.1 BNM proves the obvious point, that BNM has nothing to do with score and it's entirely due to that they consider it "important" in the view of their own coverage for the year. Might not be as good as some other things but it's more defining sooooo

but yeah, publication (especially pitchfork) politics in the way they handle trends in coverage, how they choose what to score and what to cover and the order of things really really fascinates me. i feel similarly when it comes to trends in pop music and popularity as well. just looking how things are popular and why it is in the scope of what's around it and what came before it is just super complicated but interesting, since it's mostly sculpted by specific labels and tastemakers rather than the fans themselves

I find it interesting as well. BNM is huge for an artist. So these veteran acts that have been given them the past 3-4 records not getting them is telling. Pitchfork is trying to stay ahead of the curve when it comes to innovative acts. It probably doesn’t benefit P4K any to hand out BNMs to Grizzly Bear, St. V, and The National. Their business model from day one has always been to find the next best thing.

Still want to see Annie get all the accolades she can get though.

one of the other more interesting cases this year is the brand new album. if this album came out in 2012 instead of this year i don't even think it would have been reviewed. but because of the context behind the "emo revival" and that people who were brand new fans in 2003 are now the main tastemakers in indie publications such as pitchfork and spin the album got pushed far harder than it would have before.

For sure. Makes me wonder what kind of artists/records now, will become canon in 10 years that are maybe overlooked by certain publications today.

Are you a member? If so, how do you feel about the Moses Sumney album. Additionally, cool This Heat avatar.

I swapped out for Demon Days this month. The cuts I've heard from Aromanticism are tight but I just couldn't pass up the chance to get that Gorillaz record.

I have been unsubscribed for a while but have been wanting to pick it back up on a possible month-to-month basis. Didn’t know about Demon Days being in the lineup previously. That’s a nice pick.

Never have St Vincent a chance but damn this album is good. Should I work my way backwards chronologically?

I don’t think either of the last two get even close to the masterpiece of strange mercy

I am having major recency bias with this record, I think it will contend for her best. That being said I think Strange Mercy is the other best record challenger. The other 3 are all fantastic as well. “Birth in Reverse” is still amazing and check out her single “Krokodil” which is probably her heaviest song.
