  2. @Jesse West Rings True - spooky! I feel like this fits this time of year very well, with that sorta dissonant synth going on and the slightly distorted vocals. Good track!

@JakeRabin Grave Dance - cool to here some good ol' punk rock on this thing! Love the energy, the "woah's" at the end were a very nice touch as well. Sorta like the previous track, kinda fits in with this time of year so that helps too!

@bradsonemanband The New You 2017 - maybe one of the best sounding songs I've heard from you production wise! Really fun pop punk track, really hearing that Blink influence come out here. Stoked to work my way down the comp and hear the first version to see how it compares! 808's galore have this thing sounding huuuuge. The layered vocals at the end are a nice touch as well.

Master Blaster @Benjamin Lee - I really like the rhythm and melodies throughout the song. The "every song is growing faster..." chorus has been in my head.
Sudden Pacific @thewmaynes - This song is great, I love the contrast between the instrumentals and the lyrics. The lyrics are pretty sad, but the instrumentals have a bit of an upbeat tune to them. Definitely mirrors the "in time, we'll all see the humor in this" line at the end.
Field @nfdv2 - You've got a great voice. I love the lyrical style as well, they strike me as rooted in personal experiences, which helps me relate to them as well. Also bonus points for that little solo bass line that comes in near the end.
Heros & Idols @JakeRabin - The emotion in your voice at the end of the song really makes it for me. Great stuff.
Would You Hate Me @Jdaniels - "This is what I was afraid of darling, this is why I was afraid of calling" and "good luck, good luck, good luck..." are great hooks.
An Optimist's Vision of the Future @ImAMetaphor - A nice quick track with a punchy acoustic riff, what's not to like?
We Built A House @js977 - It's a pretty aggressive song that works well acoustic. I would love to hear a full band version of this. I fell like it would translate very well.
Ascension @ricklightning - This one caught me off guard. The perfect mosh song. Starts heavy, so I'd be going nuts in the pit, then it gives you a nice long break with some beautiful soft guitars and drums... and then it comes back with the heavy. I love it.
A Tiny Sea @Wall Of Arms - I really like the guitar effects used here. Is that flanger? And the vocal delivery fits in perfect with those guitars.
Look In Your Eyes @ComedownMachine - A very eerie electronic tone on this one. I really dig the chorus too.
Rocket Blue @Erwin89 @Patterns in Traffic - This captures that late 90's early 2000's blink-esque pop rock sound perfectly.
This Fire @nickyeatworld - The interrupted guitar effects (not sure what you call them) are awesome, especially when they kick in after the chorus. Adds another layer of catchiness to the song.
/marXhall.v/ @Pseudo! - This is a beautiful track. That guitar riff underneath the strings and distant vocals is incredible. Really love this one.

    Late on this, but...

My song, "Life in the Rearview Mirror," is also the title track of the album I put out this year. I wrote it for my wife on our second wedding anniversary. It's basically a look back at the time we've spent together, told from the perspective of the day I finished college and went off to move in with her. We grew up in the same hometown and went to high school together, but went to different colleges, so we were mostly long distance during the first three years of our relationship. When I finally finished school (she was a year ahead of me), I didn't know shit about what I wanted to do with my life/how I was going to make a living/etc., but I knew we were finally going to live together.

So the song is basically about driving into the unknown, knowing nothing about the future except that we were going to not be long distance anymore. But it's also about being ready to face whatever happens, and not wanting to live in the past (hence the lines "the only unobstructed view is through this cracked windshield/I guess I'm lucky 'cause I can't keep looking back/At my life in the rearview mirror"). All the little details--the flooded trunk of my car, the backseat so stacked with stuff that I couldn't see anything out the back, the dinner theater I used to work at that got turned into an organic foods market, the beach where we first kissed that isn't there anymore because the water levels went up--are all totally true.

@Pseudo! Pig - I love this track. It's dirty and pretty all at the same time. Harmonies in the chorus sound sooo good. Whole song gives me such 90's vibes, even down to the production. Ever heard of a band called Teenage Wrist? This song kinda reminds me of something I could see them releasing. What do you do in this band?

@Common Conversation Volumes and Tones - When that intro came in I was like O_O this song is so good! Really good mixing, there's a lot of stuff going on here but it al plays well off of each other and nothing sounds overpowering. Love that it's short too.

@Craig Manning Life In The Rearview Mirror - heard your stuff before, but nothing beyond acoustic tracks, so this was a really cool change up! Really helps bring out the dynamics in your songwriting to have drums, loving that addition. The piano also sounds great! Did you play piano as well? Really fills everything out and brings the song to life. The harmonizing background vocals are beautiful as well. You get better every time I hear something new!

  9. Alright now I'm at my first submission, which I already talked about:

And I'll post the lyrics here too for anyone that cares for that kind of stuff:

Hey, thanks! Yeah, I play piano. Actually have played piano for a lot longer than I've played guitar (or sang, for that matter), but didn't have a piano or keyboard when I was writing and recording my last album. I got to incorporate that a bit more this time around, which was fun.

@ComedownMachine Out Of My System - Could totally see this working as a closer, I see your angle there! I like how simple the riff is but how it carries the song so well. Almost wanna say I'm getting some Pinback vibes? The horns at the end were awesome too, I kind wish that part went longer but I can see why you would want to cut it to just give a little taste. A little restraint is always welcome! Good stuff!

@Benjamin Lee Master Blaster - there's a slide at this water park I used to love as a kid called the master blaster so I'm pretending that's what this song is about lol. Anyway, this was a fun listen! I like your drum sound a lot, the snare in particular pops really nicely. The production has a very "live" feel and I can't place my finger on why but I really like it. Also like how the chorus does that big explosive start and then stops and goes into the next part of chorus with the snare on the 2 and the 4. Gives it a little extra groove!

@thewmaynes Sudden Pacific - this song makes me feel like I need to be on a beach with a margarita in my hand or something hahaha, it's awesome! I think it's that driving acoustic strum. Really nice layering there. Love the chorus a lot, the chord progrssion and vocal melody remind me of something I'd hear from Vinnie Caruana. I don't believe I've seen a submission from you before, so welcome! Hope to hear some
covers from you in the future! (unless you have contributed before and I'm just being a forgetful jerk)

@nfdv2 Field - well I didn't recognize the username but sure recognized the project name! Glad to hear from you on this one. I think this is the first time I've heard a track of yours with drums on it, they seemed a little quiet but I totally get what you were going for and since your music is naturally kind of quiet, I think it fits well! And as always, I love hearing your voice. It's just so soothing! What with all of the guitar layering, I can tell you put more time into this than most of the stuff I've heard of yours, and it paid off! Nice work!

  12. @JakeRabin Heroes & Idols - just a straightforward, solid acoustic track! Awesome. So what was that instrument around 1:40? Sounds like it could just be guitar harmonics but also sorta sounds like a mallet instrument or a kalimba. Either way, really liked how you used it to break up the softer vocals from the louder ones. Track title says acoustic, does that mean there's a full band version of this too?

@Jdaniels Would You Hate Me - gotta love a good ol' acoustic heartbreak song. Can tell you put your heart into this! Solid song structuring, is be really interested in hearing a full band version of this if you ever recorded it! One of those songs that I can hear rocking in my head but sounds just as good with a solo acoustic guitar -- qualities of a good song! Nice job!

@ImAMetaphor Optimist's Vision... - that acoustic guitar sounds so nice and up front and clear! Love how it this song carries pretty much the same dynamic the whole way through but is very short and sweet. The chords you chose remind me a lot of Eastern Leaves by Moving Mountains. Lyrical content is solid and the simplicity of the song gives me the vibe that these are words you felt you really just needed to get off your chest. Can very much appreciate that. What kind of mic did you use for this?

@js977 We Built A House - another acoustic track that I could see doing totally well transferring to a full band rendition! Had my head bopping all throughout, this is such a rocker for being just a dude and his guitar! Haha. I like how your voice is kind of quiet over it all, really lets the guitar and vocals play off of each other instead of one being more up front.

@aoftbsten Ruckus Ruckus - woahhhhh what are these sounds?! Hahah I was so taken aback when this started. It's so cool and original sounding! Are you just using some crazy bass filter or something? It sounds so wild and disorienting but also kinda grooves which is awesome. The guitar in the second half is an absolute TRIP. Absolutely did not expect to hear something's like this on the comp so thank you for surprising the hell out me!

@ricklightning Ascension - holy shiiiiit this song is aggressive haha. Glad to hear some heavy stuff on this comp. It's so muddy and yet transitions so well to that really beautiful clean part in the middle that sorta descrescendos until it blows right back up at the end. Was really hoping it'd do that! This one sounds like it'd be a lot of fun to play live. The screams remind me a lot of BTBAM or Disambiguation era Underoath. What did you do in this band?

Thank you so much for the kind words! I am so glad you liked the song! I’d have to ask my friend/producer, but I *think* they were SM-58s. We used two, one to mic the soundhole and a room mic.

Yeah definitely check out Pinback. Summer In Abbadon is probably my favorite record from them. If you're looking for some songs to get a taste, I'd recommend Fortress, Loro, and Non-Photo Blue.

  20. Gotcha. Yeah maybe it's just cause it's low in the mix but for some reason my ears did not recognize it as a guitar lol. Will def give your EP a listen when you finish it!

  21. @Wall Of Arms A Timy Sea - love this! So simple and soothing. Really a great example of the marriage of music and lyrics. The chorus FX used really translate that feeling of being underwater. The melody sort of repeating itself makes this easy to hum along to, and I like how crystal clear your vocals are. You sing really gently here and and that clear vocal production really puts an exclamation point on your performance.

@ComedownMachine Look In Your Eyes - very different from the first track! Appreciate the variety. Like how immediately this comes to grab the attention of the listener. You guys definitely accomplished the 8-bit vibe! That's a really cool idea and it turned out great. It's a fun beat that I'm sure was interesting to try putting vocals to! Lol my girlfriend heard the music through my headphones and grabbed my attention to ask if I was playing a video game :crylaugh:

@Erwin89 @Patterns in Traffic Rocket Blue - hell yeah, real old school pop punk vibes going on here. Really reminds me of the old Drive-Thru days. Great hook in the chorus and a killer solo to boot! At 2:42 where it goes half time I audibly went "wooo!". Love seeing members of community collab and this turned out fantastically.

@nickyeatworld This Fire - woah, what a catchy chorus! Really like all the glitchy cutting in-and-out stuff you did with the guitar. This track totally reminds me of something I'd hear from EDEN or something. Really cool to hear a guitar solo in a song like this too! Love that little rhythmic break you went for at like 2:35, and again in the last chorus. You're another user I'm unfamiliar with, but I do hope to hear more from you in the future on our cover comps! This track shows you've got a great ear for melody.

@Pseudo! /marXhall.v/ - alright first off... sorry behind the name? Hahah. Anyway, beautiful track. Enjoyed every second of this, each one more than the last even. This sounds a like it was a fun afternoon of inspired creativity. Are your song on this part of an EP by chance? I'd be interested to hear the rest. This track gives me some Aqueous Transmission vibes for sure.

@Mr. Serotonin Hummingbird - FUCK this was great. Like this more than Waves, even. That chorus smacks. Loved everything about my listen of this. You've got excellent songwriting chops, my friend. And again, the production is top notch. That "Carry OOOOON" is sooo good. You have an incredible voice, my dude. The little bass runs in the second verse were super impressive as well.

@nfdv2 Infinite Sheets - really lovingly hearing some new stuff from you on this. You got a nice overdrive tone going for sure and I love it paired with the acoustic guitar at the end there. Catchy chorus too -- the harmonies you threw in there made me smile. Reminded me of Tancred or something. Maybe that has to do with the fuzzy guitar tone too. In any case, another super enjoyable track!!

@teebs41 The Consequence - after reading the description earlier, I was anticipating a darker track sonically, glad this track delivered. Those harmonies in the chorus are soooaring! Really cool how the verses had totally different vibes but still met the same chorus in the end! The part after that second chorus is so explosive and fun. And the tension built up with that part at the end is perfect -- really adds to the lyrical content. Whole song gave me some heavy Emery vibes, especially those vocals.

@aoftbsten @trevorshmevor thanks for the kind words guys! Once I have the resources I’d love to do a full band rendition haha at the time all I had was a multitrack and had never sang before but one day there will be a better version.

  23. @elemenohpe Change Now - didn't see this coming at ALL hahah. Really cool to hear something like this from you! Classic breakneck post-hardcore vibes. A lot of little bass parts stuck out to me as being pretty cool -- I like that you didn't always just follow the root not on the guitar, which is easy to fall into with that type of music. Your vocal production is cool too, the layered vocals really worked in your favor and I like that the cleans were done differently then the screams. You definitely got some head bangs out of me duder!

@Wall Of Arms Hard Hard Heart - like this even more than the last one! You have a very good voice, your vocal... inflection? reminds me a lot of Joey from From Indian Lakes. This track is really dreamy sounding but has their air of intensity that really breathes some extra life into it. Those crescendoing guitars in the chorus are a great example of that.

@cbaksa @colemanbright Nothing To See Here - excellent track! That beat slaaaaps. Getting heavy PVRIS vibes from this. Very catchy chorus as well. interested to hear more from you two and hope to see you on future cover comps as well!

@bodkins @alexmelton Plans - that little arpeggiating synth in the verse remind me so much of The 1975! That's a very good thing. I also really hear that Ben Gibbard influence in her vocal melody on this one too. The chorus is so epic sounding with the drums doing that pattern where the snare starts on the 1. Really solid hook there too! I bet I'll be humming that part randomly at some point this week.

@Pseudo! Rent - unsurprisingly, I love this. Really awesome production. You've got a very unique style and I've really enjoyed hearing your voice on this comp. these songs are undoubtedly a few of the ones I'll come back to most.the way this track sorta explodes and turns into this huge epic thing is so intoxicating -- the harmonizing "ah's" are such a cool layer over that musical peak.

  24. Alright I think I'm calling it a night on this. Aside from just generally exceptional musicianship, I'm really surprised at the amount of amazingly produced tracks here. Y'all are some wizards behind the boards, assuming most of these are self produced. Really makes me wish I'd had more time to set aside to write/record for this! One thing for sure is that it's motivating me to want to write more going forward. I also was very wrong about assuming this would be rock-heavy, and while I'm enjoying those types of tracks thoroughly, I'm very appreciative of the diversity.

Stoked to jump back into this tomorrow!

I played guitar and did back-up vocals. And yeah it was a crazy song to play live! :-) I need to check out BTBAM a bit more and that Underoath album. Only heard a couple of songs by BTBAM and Disambiguation was released right at the time when I kinda stopped listening to Underoath.

Our band started out being influenced a lot by bands like Funeral Diner, but as the years passed we progressed to move towards influences like Cult of Luna and other post-rock/post-metal bands. This was one of those later songs we wrote.
