He wasn't a teenager when he wrote it though, that's why I find it melodramatic. And other lines in there like 'Every picture you paint, I will paint myself out' I find clunky and cheesy.

My point was really that there's plenty of crap lyrics in the first two albums, yet Daisy seems to cop a lot of hate for it. But if you're a fan of Sonic Youth, Modest Mouse, lots of other bands, there's enough going on musically where they're offering something new to focus on. If you're not into that stuff, also cool. Doesn't make Daisy a bad album though. Depending on the day, it's one of my favourites by them.

I always thought the appeal of DE was just how serious it was. I thought what elevated BN above their contemporaries at that time was Jesse’s ability to take teenage melodrama and make it feel valid and just and powerful.

Absolutely cheesy, but I don't find it awkward/clunky in the context of the song

I'm a very big fan of the majority of bands BN aped to create Daisy, which is part of the reason I really didn't like it as much. Jesse doing an Isaac Brock yelp impression throughout the album was super grating. He doesn't have the pipes for what he was trying to do. The only bright spot, at least to me, on the album is the musicianship, and that's typically pretty low on my list of things I care about/pick out while listening to an album

I got into BN fairly late, so maybe not having the context of it all has me listening to it differently. But I only get down to about half of that album and very rarely do I listen to it.

Absolutely. I think all of my friends who are into BN would agree that the album validated and put into words a lot of our dumbass corny teenage feelings. As shown whenever discussion about Deja comes up, the people who don't "get" it seem to be the ones who got into the album late.

TBH I couldn't imagine relying on TDAG to get me through high school relationships or some shit, lol. What a dark album.

I was going through my first major breakup when I heard both albums... Picked TDAG haha.

Fair enough. Deja and YFW were the albums that I projected all of my dumb real life shit onto, so they're the albums that I gravitate the most towards. TDAG is technically and lyrically a better album than both, but I don't have much aside from nostalgic memories attached to it, which is why I return to Deja and the Demos more.

I first heard both albums while crushing on the same girl whose favorite band was brand new haha. Deja is of course the more romantic one and a better listen for similar feelings. TDAG is my personal favorite though, partially because I think it’s more consistent emotionally for me (I don’t connect with 25-50% of deja but adore the rest) and partially i just like the music more.

Out of interest, what cuts from DE do you dig?

Certainly not as big a Brand New fan as you guys, but I do really enjoy TDAG and Deja.

I do admit that there are quite a few eye rolling melodramatic lyrics in Deja, but I also feel that was exactly what the genre at that time was doing?

Whereas sometimes I feel like Andy can go a little off the deep end attempting to be aloof, fictional and existential, I feel like Brand New went a bit too cheesy and whiney with lyrics.

The songs and rhythm however I think are far superior on TDAG and Deja. I enjoyed At the Bottom, Daisy and In a Jar, but Vices, Bed, and Be Gone I just thought were honestly BAD songs. The rest being decent to eh.

It's probably true that I'm not at all a fan of screaming or the experimental sounds. Just felt very odd and out of place as a whole when compared to everything else.

I can see people who are more into hardcore stuff liking it. But I can also absolutely see Brand New fans who had followed them for a while going "Uhhhh wtf"

Daisy was the first album they put out that wasn't a drastic step forward.

It's a great album, but a lot of the lyrics aren't as interesting to me.

This is why I don't get into it anymore. Liked it a bit when I heard it for the first time, came back to it and felt it hadn't aged well. Having no nostalgic link to the album, I don't really miss it haha.

MO is a band whose catalogue I like the further back I go, the earlier the better for me!

Boy who blocked is my favorite, rest of the top half is guernica, jaws, quiet things, crack the sky, and maradona. I do love the whole album, but there’s a pretty distinct top and bottom half for me.

I feel like when daisy came out there was a collective “uh wtf” from almost everybody. I love screaming so it wasn’t that that put me off, more just the lack of memorable melodies and outright ugly sounds. To this day I don’t understand the love for vices. It’s just grating and sounds like they tried to be annoying. That said I love most of the album.

You should check out Daisy's cousin Everybody is going to heaven by Citizen. You might enjoy it more. Also can't go wrong with either Is Dead or I was trying to describe you to someone by Crime in Stereo.

Daisy is definitely an acquired taste the albums I mention are in the same vein as Daisy but easier to get into

New album still holds up. Can't wait for my vinyl. Even if it is just the black variant, ha.

Just because the lyrics on Deja are, understandably, more juvenile doesn't mean they're cheesy imo. I think they make a lot of sense and have the greatest impact when put in the context of a place and time within people's lives, and more generally, the time in which the album came out. Lots of great lyrics on that album. Jaws Theme Swimming for eg.

I listened to Deja the day I turned 30 years old and still related to it. That was 8 months ago.

Also, the first time I ever heard The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows was on the radio on my way to my friends funeral in 2003. So many memories around that album. Good and Bad. That’s how I was introduced to this band.

I didn’t hear Deja till after I listened to TDAG. I think I was only 11 when my brother brought home the TDAG CD haha. Never really got much out of the album till high school but it did lead me to Deja which my young n emo middle school self could vibe with.

I'll never forget the first time I heard Daisy. I knew it leaked, so I went to go find it online, listened and when Vices came on, I was convinced it was fake. Not sure if you remember, but when The Republic of Wolves first came on the scene, they had some demos released in 2008 and there names weren't attached to them and everyone thought it was Brand New (demos from what would be Daisy - and they were really good). So I was completely caught off guard with the heavier/screaming sound.

I did a first listen and was I guess my initial thought was that the album was...interesting at the very least. I didn't love it immediately, but I didn't hate it either. But it was the first Brand New album since YFW that didn't immediately hit me. Because it was a leak, I didn't have it in my possession so I went a few days without hearing it again, but I remember the weeks before it came out thinking, 'man I need to listen to that again'

pretty positive that demo situation was cleared up before daisy actually came out. and we knew it would be heavier from bought a bride and gasoline

Yeah Jesse did those songs solo. Premiered them live before the album came out. I remember people calling bought a bride Trees because the official title wasn't out yet
