Great album. It's not nearly as good as I like it when you sleep, but it's still very solid in its own right.

Man, I think iliwys blows it out of the water. More consistently great with better highlights and much more sonic exploration.

It's certainly a broader album, and just as great. But man, that self-titled hit me like a fifth Brand New album. I remember I wasn't even aware of their existence. I had a friend play me Chocolate, and I fell in love with that style and sound quickly. I knew all the songs from that album within a week I think. ILIWYS I was anticipating greatly. I bought the physical copy day of release without listening to leaks and really loved that one too.

Now that i've seen them live and gotten plenty of play out of both, I can say that I strongly believe the self-titled is just a fuller, funner, and more emotionally drawing album than the second. Some of my favorites from them are on that album, but it just doesn't feel as heart felt. It feels more influenced by their stature as a band and what was expected from them, as opposed to the first. But really, I mean it's not even an insult. So many bands work for years with their best concepts and songs being fine tuned, and once it's out and critically acclaimed, you get a record deal and 1/4 the time to do it again. For as good as the second album was, I am truly impressed.

I feel way more emotion and heart in the second album than the first. Plus I think everything is better written, better executed, better in every way really.

I think we're pretty far apart on this one haha. I'd describe the two essentially opposite of the way you did. I thought the self titled had some great songs and showed a lot of promise - and it's certainly a great "debut" album - but to me it's still somewhat uneven, and iliwys eliminated that issue while also introducing more diversity.

Certainly did introduce a lot more diversity. Matty's lyrics (aside from UGH!) matured greatly as well. But there are some tracks on there that are reallllll snoozers for me. Specifically ones that just sound like they were made with Matty alone in the studio with a keyboard.

They're yin and yang for me. ILIWYS is clearly more accomplished and artistic, but it's hard to say one has more heart than the other.

The thing I've noticed is this: when I'm driving around my hometown, it's all about Self titled and the EPs. But when I'm away or travelling, I listen to ILIWYS more. They represent different things for me and it's unfair for me to rank them. That being said, I put ILIWYS in my top 10 for the time being haha.

S/T vs ILIWYS is really a tough comparison for me because I really love both albums equally. I'll admit I go back to ILIWYS more often if I had to rank one over the other it would be that but really depends on my mood. That said - if we are counting the EPs with the whole package of S/T then that changes things.

    S/T
Few songs hit me the way Pressure does on this album. The saxaphone solo, the lyrics, everything about this song is perfect to me. I am so glad I have seen it live and would love to see it return to their setlist at some point. Robbers is such a great song and standout for what the band is capable of. It's so funny that this band got huge off of Chocolate because I would say of their songs it's my least-liked and doesn't really do a great job highlighting what makes this band so immense. The City, Settle Down, She Way Out are all great songs and I love how this album ends on Is There Somebody Who Can Watch You.

If we are factoring in the EPs. Seriously some of the best work out there by any band and really shows how talented this band is. You, Antichrist, Woman, Heads.Cars.Bending, Me, Haunt//Bed are all some of my favorite songs. I think these could have been put together as a more formal album and would have been huge for them.

    ILIWYS:
What can I say about this album. Simply put - It's incredible. The band reached new heights in their songwriting ability, their live show, finding their own sound while honoring their influences. In my opinion there is not a bad song on here. The whole album is highlight after highlight for me but if I had to pick what resonates: Somebody Else is a contender for best song they have ever written/one of my favorite songs of all time. I love the call backs in A Change of Heart to Robbers. Please/ Be Naked/Lostmyhead do a great job breaking up the album and prove how minimal lyrics and incredible tone can still hit you in ways that brilliantly crafted lyrics can. The Sound, Paris & Ugh! show how fun this band still is where Nana & She Lays Down show how deep they also are.

The band is pretty incredible. They were pegged as another typical pop band and through amazing work proved how wrong that generalization was.

Matty and George literally produce some of their music. I don't know their exact business relationship, but Matty pushes them really hard.

I'd feel kind of weird helping to push and produce a band's image and sound when it seems cut straight out of your own. That's just me though. Maybe Matty and the rest of the band toss all their discarded songs to these guys so they still get released.
