    Ah man you are in for a real treat. I started with Husbands which is definitely an unconventional starting point to say the least but tbh it turned out to be pretty perfect after all just because it was so different from anything i had ever seen before at the time and since. So real and raw and awkward and chaotic. All his movies are like that. You're just basically a fly on the wall while you are watching them. But yeah that criterion box set includes 5 classics , a documentary and a small book totally worth the blind buy imo. I also have Love Streams I consider it to be the last movie he directed but have yet to watch it. His wife and him play brother and sister in it and its really supposed to be fantastic. I really need to watch it soon.

    @Bloodsucker II

    Watched a couple more episodes of Twin Peaks. I finally got hooked.

    I will say, I was confused by Cooper's makeup during his dream sequence in the third episode. I was like wtf, is he molting!?! lol

    It later became apparent from reading up on the wiki that he was like an old version of himself. That never crossed my mind.

    Haha, great episode. Expect more surrealist stuff like that to come. What did you think of that whole sequence?

    I kept questioning how the damn thing was shot. I was like, did they try to approximate what the dialog would be like backwards, deliver it, and then reverse it so the it played forward but retained that creepy element...

    That's pretty much exactly what they did haha. For instance, when the man says, "Let's rock!" They recorded him saying, what was essentially, "car stel" and then played it in reverse, but for every line.

    I'm familiar with some films he's had roles in, but can't say I've seen anything he's directed. I know he is pretty widely revered.

    It was so trippy and I was finally legitimately gripped. It seemed like everything leading up to that point was playing at this idea of mysterious forces, but we only got Cooper's accounts up to that point. I was happy to finally live one of these instances out with him so I can know that he isn't just some eccentric weirdo without reason lol.

    He was such a maverick.

    "Cassavetes was a pioneer of American independent film, writing and directing over a dozen movies, which he partially self-financed, and pioneered the use of improvisation and a realistic cinéma vérité style. He also acted in many Hollywood films, notably Rosemary's Baby(1968) and The Dirty Dozen (1967). He studied acting with Don Richardson, using an acting technique based on muscle memory. His income from acting made it possible for him to direct his own films independently."

    The Filmmaking style section of his wiki is worth reading to know more.
