I got it. I'm in the camp that there's always a better way to communicate than 'fuck off with that shit' though. Notice how someone else politely let me know that my comment was insensitive to those struggling with mental illness and suicidal thoughts, and I acknowledged that and discussed with them politely in different terms.

You obviously want the world to be a better place though and people to be more sensitive to others and I commend and admire you and hope we get there with one 'fuck off with that shit' at a time'.

 

There are so many bands that are so much more depressing than The National. I'm not even a die hard fan or anything, but I've always felt there was a wryness to their sad lyrics.

 

They also have songs like Slow Show and now Dark Side of the Gym which are not even remotely dark. They contain some cynicism, sure, but they are bona fide love songs.

 

A Crow Looked at Me and Hospice are depressing.

After hearing both nothing as a whole can compare haha.

Appreciate the added input and perspective. It's not really about the lyrics, it's more of just the feel and sound they put out. I just listened to Dark Side of the gym and even that song is still moody, dark and just generally off-putting in it's atmosphere. I really think it's his voice. I am just going to chalk this band up as not for me. For an example of a band in the 'depressing' category that I really enjoy are 'Editors'. The guy has a deep voice, their lyrics are depressing but something about their instrumentals appeal to me and offset the gloominess.

 

Obviously not because no one laughed at my joke so I'm not pursuing it as a career.... Badum Tish.

I made an insensitive remark implying that depressing music can cause depression, Ie, I get depressed when I listen to the National. It was hyperbolic and not funny and too far but I certainly didn't say all National fans should kill themselves.
