Obvi too early to really know...but I don't dislike anything on this record.

So should place it above VW and Desc for me in the long run. Once I get lyrics it might also jump BSN.

I don't think anything will ever beat the first two. I'm basically a Reddit brand new fan when it comes to circa.

what? Descensus may be the most varied of the last 3. Theres post metal, post rock, grunge, a little shoegaze, theres organs and weird guitar textures in a few songs, its all over the place. even in single tracks theres variety like Nesting Dolls and the title track.

this album is far more a rock record than either of the last two

BSN, VW, and D all have really prominent alt rock stylings come to the forefront of at least a chunk of their tracks.

Amulet doesn't feel that way. It feels like 2 guitars and a vocalist weaving wandering melodies in and out of eachother at grooving odd signatures.

But I'd definitely say that Descensus, no matter how I felt about its quality, had a good variance of style.

Yeah Descensus is absolutely varied in its sounds. Nesting Dolls channels post rock, which the band has never really done before, Phantom with a clear electronic aspect, the title track with its post metal leanings. We must be listening to two different albums if your version of Descensus isn't varied.

I like descensus a lot, I even went out and bought it on vinyl bc I liked it so much. I agree with a lot of your points, but maybe it's the muddy dirty guitar tones that make it feel that way where as this record usrs guitar tones that are a lot cleaner. I probably should listen to descensus in the near future to make a proper comparison

they're probably going to need someone really really good at backup vocals for these songs live

    That video was pretty cool.
Reminded me of the difference between video from OLG

Seems like religiously skeptical circa might be back in full force.

In the lead up there was lots of talk about more political/social themes on the album, does this check out now you're all hearing it?

There's a few songs, like the Hex songs, with some political undertones. Hell even the press release I got when they sent me the album mentioned it having those themes. I think they're just real abstract like most of AGs lyrics

Are you able to shed a little more light on what the press release said to you? I'd love to hear as much as I can about the album

Basically themes of political upheaval, loss of innocence, and apocalyptic events kind of litter the album throughout. The press release didn't go into specifics but it mentioned "personal losses" as well. The album is tied together by this idea that events can cause you to lose your "rose tinted glasses" so to speak.

Tunnel Vision and At night It gets worse, remember me some things about Mew, a Danish band...

This may seem like a hot take judging from some reactions in this thread so far, but Never Tell A Soul is probably my least favorite at this point. Really feeling the stretch of Tunnel Vision, At Night, and Stay though. That's some great stuff right there.

I got to say that Stay, The Amulet, Tunnel Vision, and Lustration are my favorites so far. I'd place it easily above VW and Descensus but their first 2 and even BSN are pretty untouchable.

@ anyone who's problem with Descensus is it isn't varied enough, all their other albums are more "samey" sounding than that. The flaw of that record is that there's songs like Sovereign Circle and that other one I can't remember the name of that are just kinda lost in all these various sounds. And obviously the production hurts at times.

Sovereign Circles is one of the best on the album how dare you

I think it's just that those two albums are from a specific point in my life, along with them holding over the years. OLG is also probably my top 10 favorite albums of all time, so I'm biased as hell when comparing things to that.
