Big fan of them or the classic "U" shaped necks. I have bigger hands so chunky necked guitars are always good by me. I have a 2008 Gibson SG Classic w/ the stock P-90s and a 50's style fat neck. It's a beast of a guitar. I like what Fender is doing w/ their American Pro guitars and their "deep-C" necks. Kind of a best of both worlds.

 

Current rig:
2008 Gibson SG Classic w/ stock p-90s in heritage cherry, only thing not stock are the tuners (upgraded to schaller locking)
2008 Epiphone Sheraton that used to belong to Matt Fazzi (formerly of TBS). Replaced the stock pup's w/ a Seymour Duncan Saturday Night Special in the bridge w/ coil-splitting capabilities and a Phat Cat P-90 in the neck.
2016 Squier Classic Vibe Tele Custom, all stock right now, but I'm looking to put Seymour Duncan pup's in it in the future (preferably a single coil-sized humbucker in the bridge and throw in a series/parallel switch)
Blackstar HT-Club 40 watt tube amp
Wampler Tumnus OD pedal
MXR 10 band eq pedal
MXR Reverb pedal
Boss TR-2 Tremolo
Dunlop Crybaby Wah
and I forget which tuner I have haha it's not the boss chromatic though

 

So all I have for distortion is the OCD. I’m trying to find something a little warmer and lower gain to counter it. Obviously it’s hard to find demos online that isn’t classic rock or jazz, so do y’all have any suggestions? The blues driver is always an option but wanted to know if y’all have tried or enjoy anything else?

I'm using a Wampler Tumnus OD pedal that sounds really great. I usually play clean and kick that on for a boost w/ the gain all the way down, the level at 3 o'clock and the treble at 11 o'clock.

 

anyone in here every re-painted a guitar?

 

i haven't personally but my friend did this process where you pick a pigment and they kind of just soak the wood in it to darken it to that shade that was real cool and surprisingly cheap. this isn't helpful lol sorry @KennedyBN

im currently learning about modes a little bit. anyone have any tips to make delving into that make a little more of a smooth transition? it's pretty interesting so far, Sunny Day Real Estate's How It Feels to Be Something On, Pinkerton, and At the Drive-In have all gotten me interested in playing in different modes, seems like there's such a wide range of possibility with modal stuff when it already seemed like infinity

I was in Brighton the other week and played an Eastman 386. I think I have a new prize to work toward.

 

The thing that helped me understand modes was learning to look at the chord tones of the progression I want to play over.
Say for instance you've got an Em7 chord - your intervals are a root, b3, 5, b7. So then look at your modes and see which scales contain those intervals - for this particular chord you'll have Dorian (r, 2, b3, 4, 5, 6, b7), Phrygian (r, b2, b3, 4, 5, b6, b7) and Aeolian (natural minor - r, 2, b3, 4, 5, b6, b7). You can pretty safely play any of those modes over your Em7 chord because they all share the unique components of that chord.
Each of those modes will have it's own distinct flavour so you can mess around with each of them and see what you like, what suits the piece you're playing.

I think that's a fairly simplistic way of understanding modes but it really opened the concept up to me when I was first understanding how to use them.

 

Anyone have a preference for single-coil sized humbuckers for Tele's? I was thinking about getting a Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates for Tele, but it's a little pricy. I know there's also the Lil '59 and the Hot Rails but they have ceramic magnets and I generally prefer alnico magnets. Just wanted to see if anyone here uses one and wanted to get your thoughts.

 

This is one of those things that seems fairly obvious but helps tremendously, wow. Makes a lot of sense. I suppose when playing modal the point is to emphasize the unique notes so that makes sense to me. I'm still working on getting them all under my fingers since I've only been seriously trying to figure them out for a week. Thanks a lot!

I'm considering getting the Old Blood Noise fuzz pedal "Haunt". Worth it?

 

omg yes played one at the local guitar place around here and fell in love. If you can find somewhere to try it out I'd recommend doing so bc the tones it gets are p wide for fuzz as long as you're on the spectrum of kinda dirty to fucking filthy

 

Also fell in love with the big muff deluxe that day

 

I've wanted to try that one out but god I already own like nine different fuzz pedals, I don't think I need another one haha.

 

My Holy Grail stopped working at my last show, so I'm looking to get a new reverb pedal. Found a Craigslist listing for a Lovepedal HSR-3 and I think I might spring for it.

 

I don't know how dead-set you are on that pedal, but, speaking as a reverb nut my personal favorites are the TC Electronic Hall of Fame, Earthquaker Devices Dispatch Master (verb/delay combo), Mr. Black Supermoon (I have the chrome version and LOVE it), Blackout Effectors Cadavernous v2, and the Robot Graves Industries Sidereal.

 

I mean, I'm not super deadset on it, but I'm trying to stick with Craigslist/used bc I need it quickly and cheaply lol. I was initially just gonna get a Holy Grail nano since I'm so used to that setup, but thought it would be a good chance to try something new. There's actually a Dispatch Master listed for around the same price, and I was trying to decide between the two but I didn't necessarily feel like I needed a Reverb/Delay combo and that the delay function would go pretty underutilized.

If you're up for going more in-depth, I have a few questions for you: Have you tried the HSR-3? What did/didn't you like about it, if so? Also, what do you like about the Dispatch Master?

 

I've never actually tried the HSR-3 personally, I just can't help but jump at the chance to nerd out over pedals. Haha. As for the Dispatch Master, my experience has been that it's pretty versatile and can go from a decent, slapback-y punch when I'm playing country or blues to a solid, big sounding post-rock vibe without getting washed out, and everything else between. Simplicity of controls with just four knobs is nice too, as I feel like time-based pedals with a ton of knobs can be a little overwhelming, at least for me.

Basically it's a good reverb for almost any genre or playing style, at least the kinds of music I go back and forth between playing. If you're not one to utilize delay very much then I can see where it might be best to go with something else though.

 

Thanks for the input! Yeah, I wish I had a bigger budget/more time to look into other options, but I'm playing two big shows this week and don't wanna go without reverb for them haha. I think the main draw of the Lovepedal to me is that I p much exclusively used the hall setting on my Holy Grail and the HSR-3's hall setting sounded really great to me from the YouTube tutorials I saw. I also think I'd get some use out of the Shimmer mode too, or at least am interested in trying it out in future songwriting.

 

Anyone have too much "rigs of dad" gear? Having a hard time selling my epiphone SG.

 

Anyone here have any recs on some good essential pedals for their setup? I wanna start overhauling my rig soon and will start looking in to amps as well (e.g. small Vox, Fender tube combos), but I think i'd like to look at some of the following pedals:

Tuner
Overdrive
Distortion
Reverb

If it helps, I mostly play material in line with Chorus-esque rock, punk, emo, and metalcore acts.

 

I use a Boss TU-2 tuner, Fulltone Fulldrive 2 for overdrive/distortion, and an Old Blood Noise Procession for reverb. I'm pretty happy with all of them although the Procession is definitely better for weird and spacey reverb sounds and maybe not as great of general purpose reverb like a Holy Grail.
