This was fun...far from perfect, but fun.

Same, but appreciate the vibe, humor, heart, etc. so much -- pretty much smiled the entire time and didn't want to get off the ride.

Enjoyed this. Some really bad scenes/acting and the ending was corny, but it was definitely fun

    To expound a bit,

I'm only halfway done the book so I can't speak on how the film handled the ending of the 60s (80s) section, but I felt it did an okay job at personifying each of the losers, save Mike. Really wish they gave him more screen time/depth. Felt that Stan was also a bit flat but I still don't find his character in the book all that interesting either. Ben, Bev, Billy and Richie were all wonderful and the dynamic of the kids together was easily the strong point of the film.

I think Skarsgard did a decent Pennywise, specifically at the beginning of the film and the first standoff in Neibolt with Eddie, Richie and Bill. Idk what the fuck the dancing scene was with Bev towards the end, that was silly. I also thought the entire final showdown was pretty poorly done and relatively anticlimactic. Bill/Georgie scene at the end was poorly done and Richie's "Welcome to the Loser's Club, asshole!" line was awful. Same with whatever quip he said about the summer assignment after Pennywise goes down the tube. Setpiece of the floating kids/Bev was pretty cool.

I wish the pacing of the film was better. I would have preferred more plot/character development and less individual scare scenes. I absolutely hated the CGI sped up imagery that accompanied each of the scares, but I also really hate the modern trend of haunted house/ghost movies. Pennywise looked awful in a ton of the scenes that were clearly CGI. Stan's painting woman was weak as hell. Ben seeing the boy's head in the tree in the library got me, but again the headless kid was kinda lame. I really enjoyed the leper scene with Eddie. The imagery in the meat locker with a obscured Pennywise looking at Mike was pretty awesome. I would have preferred more visual horror like that than the jump scares we got.

Other than that, there were simply some clunky scenes. The acting of the deli guy who comes out after the boys almost run Mike over was absolutely horrendous. The tone throughout was a bit inconsistent and varied wildly scene to scene. As much as I enjoy the Cure and "Six Different Ways" is one of my favorite songs, I have no idea what the hell kind of tone they were going for during that scene. Bowers could have been portrayed more realistically. I understand he's a monster in the book as well, but I would have enjoyed more scenes like the movie theater with the Losers facing off against his gang prior to any of the paranormal stuff.

Overall, I still enjoyed it despite its faults. The kids did a fantastic job and I felt that certain scenes really did capture the atmosphere present in the book; but overall it still fell short of my expectations. At least it wasn't as boring as the 90s miniseries!

Fucking perfect 10/10. Such a great feeling having your favorite story of all time adapted so well. It definitely felt like it was made more for the fans. Every scene, every damn scare worked. Also loved that the scenes from the trailers added more scares, so they still felt fresh.

Audience went insane when it said Chapter 1 at the end.

I adored this, really couldn't ask for much more.

Me and my friends were kinda surprised to see it was offered in IMAX, but after watching it in standard I may return to see it that way. The nature scenes popped so hard, just a beautiful film.

The cast of kids obv made this. I wish the last addition to the group got some more fleshing out, but hey.

I loved this. Some lame CGI stuff aside (as well as sped up Pennywise stuff, wtf) I really really dug this. The kids were great and most of them at least got some really great development. Finn Wolfhard had some really funny lines, their whole dynamic as a group just really worked for me so it made a lot of the film that much more endearing.

Henry Bowers is terrifying at times in the book. I thought that kid did an awful job, but he wasn't give much to work with either. He just yelled a lot and just seemed angry instead of insane/evil.

That really is my only real complaint about this film. It worked for me in every other way. I knew going in that there would be some changes given the time changes, but it just worked for me. You can't flesh out every single Loser in two hours and some change but each of the kids had a chance to shine in their own way.

Lot of liberties taken obviously but I fucking loved every second of this. Perfectly spooky and unexpectedly hilarious. If I had any complaint actually, it would be that the comedy almost overshadowed the horror -- felt more like The Goonies with more cursing haha. Makes me wonder how they're gonna handle Chapter 2, because I don't think the humor will translate. The scares were well timed though and my fear of them showing too much in the trailers was toppled completely. The kids were all great and their chemistry was perfect despite a couple of underdeveloped characters (looking at Stan and Mike especially). Can't wait to see this again.

Question: I guess this is dependent on what you thought of Mama, but I found that movie to be mostly terrible and felt that it would have been massively improved if Andre showed some restraint. Does this suffer from any of the same issues Mama had?

I think if you really really enjoy the book, you may not like the film.

It's far better than the miniseries, but that's not saying much. The problem is that the original adaptation isn't good enough to stand up to the book and this version is good enough of a film even without the book.

Haven't seen mama, but I think the horror elements of IT do suffer from a lack of restraint. It's pretty over-the-top. Too many crooked camera angles. The score is also over dramatic and generic.

Took the words outta my keyboard. Mike was really underdeveloped but the rest of the kids were amazing. The tone was so all over the place and inconsistent.

I wish David Robert Mitchell directed this.

I know you're a huge, huge King fan just from your posts in the book/horror threads so I'm interested to hear why you're so in love with the film. Not to say I didn't enjoy it (I'm still not finished the book), but I wanna hear more of your thoughts about it.

There are a bunch of reasons I could point to the book as being my favorite but I think the main concept I always go back to is the way the Pennywise is so perfectly terror incarnate. That's an idea my mind has never really been able to get away from when I think of terror, or a ruthless antagonist. There are so many little moments I can point to from the book where it followed each character by themselves and brought there fears to life. I loved the way they adapted that here, with each vignette being a little bit different from the book and adding something new.

The Losers Club is also my favorite group of characters like ever, and the kids were perfect. The movie 100% rested on their shoulders and wouldn't have worked if they hadn't been so up task.

There was also a ridiculous amount of love thrown in for book readers. Things like the Turtle, the Deadlights, Eddie's yellow shirt, Beep-Beep Richie...I don't know, I'm not the best at explaining my feelings on movies, ha, but I really couldn't ask for more.

I've mentioned before in the King thread, before the trailers I was not excited for this at all. The mini series was perfectly fine and there are a lot more King books we could be adapting (Lisey's Story, Rose Madder...). I was also just as shit on as every King fan with the Dark Tower this year, so it's really nice to have a win.

If I had to pull out a critism it's that Mike wasn't given enough. I turned to my sister about halfway through the movie and mentioned that Mike really needed to join the club.

I can't speak for @Vivatoto, but I read It when I was in the fifth grade. I have been waiting for an updated adaptation of this for over a decade.

That probably has a lot to do with why I loved it so much. It has its flaws, but it was still so nostalgic and so much fun.

I think that feelings and excitement for this film are just higher for those of us that have loved the story for so long.

I gotta disagree and say it really is that good of a movie, haha. As I mentioned in that post a moment ago, this wasn't an adaptation I was dying for.

What were your thoughts on Henry Bowers and his gang (Victor, Belch, and even Patrick).

Henry is my only true complaint about the film. I thought he was poorly written and did not really come off as truly evil. Just extremely angry. That character was just obnoxious.

And I know it may have been jarring, but I really think that character would've benefitted if the writers had made him and his father racists like they are in the novel.

I loved this movie, but I just think it meant more to me than someone who is maybe reading the book now as an adult or that hasn't read the book at all.

I was so impressed with this film. I didn't expect it to be that good. wow. I loved it. the scares were great but not out of place, wasn't just scary to be scary. the kids were fantastic, the humor was just right. even when the kids make jokes to break tension, it didn't break the tension for me, it just felt natural for scared and nervous kids to make a quick joke in those scenarios. would definitely see this again.
