He was saying that he gets locked up in the video for what he did, not in real life
He also means that if you're an abuser, you will go to jail because of law and order and yada yada yada

Dude has no understanding of the nuances behind his statement and has no business having a platform to present his ideas

They don't get a pass. For example, I stopped listening to Kanye when he claimed Bill Cosby was innocent. They are consistently critiqued. In general, when sexism is discussed in white society, it is almost always in relation to black music, so this idea that it isn't critiqued, often from a racist perspective, is ridiculous.

Oh ok! Slightly off topic...do Brand New still play these songs live or have they distanced themselves?

  4. If this is saying what it looks like it's saying, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if the abuse precipitated any infidelity - or if the "infidelity" took place after she left him in the first place.

Which surprises me exactly 0%. I've known and loved guys like him. They've got a script.

Edit: I guess he was trying to say this is what happened in the video itself - but honestly, I said what I said. The fact that his brain went there was telling and I wouldn't be surprised if it was autobiographical.

Oh I didn't realize he meant in context of the video. I don't know this kid would definitely be better shutting up and listening right now instead of continuing to defend himself.

    Hip Hop... getting a pass?

This is why I say that hip-hop has done more damage to young African-Americans than racism in recent years!

    exactly

I think he truly believes that he's trying to make a positive statement with the rollout of this song...but again, I don't think he understands. Shutting up and listening is seriously the best thing for him

  9. Hip hop doesn't get a pass. It's critiqued constantly.

But more importantly, whenever that critique happens, it tends to come from white communities/writers and it's nearly impossible for that conversation to be helpful or non-problematic because of the racial implications, no matter how "woke" the writer in question is.

Is he saying he wanted to stalk/harass/abuse his ex for cheating on him, but he would have ended up in jail so he wrote this song instead?

This about 1000%...very rarely do you see female African American writers taking a stand against this within their own culture. I'd love to see some strong female artists take a stand, similar to Latifah in the early 90s...but I don't see that happening anytime soon.

uhhhh first of all yes they do, second of all maybe you don't see it because of the ridiculously unnecessary amount of white people trying to put their two cents in, drowning out the voices who actually matter

Also on hip hop, and this is all I will say on it, since, as @Anna Acosta pointed out, it's not really my place to critique hip hop or it's culture, speaking for myself, pop punk music is the """scene""" that I'm more engaged in. Most of us on this site have our roots in this music, so we are the ones who should be using our voices to point out the issues we've seen over the years.

While I really enjoy hip hop, it does not belong to me. I haven't grown up with it in the same way I've grown up with pop punk, and I don't have as much knowledge about it or first hand observations. It's not up to me to fix any issues that may be associated with it.

Have you heard of black twitter also known as real twitter?

  20. That's also complicated. Often times, when black women DO speak on the subject, they get largely ignored by the public (see: the R. Kelly debacle) and, from what my friends have told me (since I obviously haven't experienced it, as a non-black woman), there is immense pressure from within the community to circle the wagons and protect men in order to not feed into white supremacy.

Which I can understand to a certain point, because there's something similar in Latinx communities. We're told to protect our men, even (especially) at our own expense. You just don't talk about it, and the fact that our voices tend to fall on deaf ears isn't exactly encouraging. I would imagine it's in the same vein, although - again - I can't speak to that.

  21. And have talked on stage about how uncomfortable it makes them when people chant out to play certain song they specifically don't want to play ... and they never once used "Nobu" in a song.

Also, let us talk about context. Devos just signaled that she's going to pull back on the enforcement of campus sexual misconduct. More women are going to be subjects to violence and sexual assault as a result, and no one will be held responsible. This sort of culture assists in that, because it is saying that women are "whores" or "bitches", thereby tying their value to ownership by men, i.e., she deserved what happened to her for being promiscuous and so forth.

I get it. It's just weird for me to see bands get crucified for using words that were previously thrown around in songs casually (I'm an old man at 32). I know that language evolves as does the use of words, but I think of songs like "Bitch" by Meredith Brooks that was a radio hit (I know—completely different context and usage). Perhaps I'm desensitized from 90's and 2000's music (rap in particular) that was popularized and considered fine at the time, and that's why this doesn't shock me. Again, I'm not trying to support this band. This song is garbage. I was just trying to get some clarity on why this was getting so much backlash considering all the other shitty music out there, and I've got it now.
I gotcha. I respect your right to draw a line in the sand with what's posted on here. It's just important that songs from all genres (rap in particular) are held to the same standard though. I think rap tends to get a free pass when other genres don't.
It sounds like you would blame yourself for being cheated on which isn't ok either :)
I had not seen that post (I somehow missed page 2 and read the rest). Valid points.

  25. Nothing says "I'm mad because I spent my parents money on someone yet I still feel justified calling them a gold digger" quite like being a teenager name dropping an expensive ~celeb grade~ Malibu sushi spot.

At least, I'm assuming it's the Malibu location. Didn't bother to check where these overcooked potatoes hail from.
