I feel like maybe the pointing Spider-Man meme is appropriate here?

My older brother lives in the USVI. They are getting hit by Irma now. Would be nice if the media gave some fucks about US territories other than Florida.

What is the GOP argument that it is unconstitutional? I don't understand their side of the argument at all...other than it being racist and xenophobic and them being unwilling to admit it.

I don't know the specifics but basically I assume the argument would be that the President doesn't have the power to just take a class of people and say "this law doesn't apply to these people".

'Human forces distort the climate and the biosphere on multiplying levels; every living thing in the deepest untouched woods and the sunless pits of the oceans is shaped, in some way, by human activity. Whatever happens next, good or bad, the Earth will record our existence for billions of years in a layer of mulched plastic and the detritus of a mass extinction. But the name, Anthropocene, is an uncomfortable one: it implies a humanity triumphant, finally emerging into its destiny as a force among worlds and stars. What it actually means is different: a humanity in excess of itself, a humanity recklessly spilling over beyond its own bounds, at risk of wiping itself out entirely. As soon as this thing called the human fully articulates itself, it threatens to vanish.'

Yeah. Essentially the argument is that the President cannot decide NOT to enforce a validly passed law.

In other words, it is an Article 2, Section 3 argument. The president "shall take care that the laws be faithfully executed..."

The argument FOR it is that the President has plenary powers when it comes to matters of immigration, as Trump argued so forcefully when his Muslim ban was in the courts.

Also, my brother texted that he is experiencing 85 MPH winds and that some trees have been uprooted. Some American citizens are going through some really tough shit right now.

In Boise, it's as if we have a hot smoky inversion. So thick I can't see the next street sign on the freeway...worst I've ever seen it.

Hope your brother stays safe. That must be terrifying for him (and for you). I'll be thinking of him.

    Thanks. That means a lot.

Literally not doing anything at work but refreshing the radar. I think we will lose contact soon. He is in a bathtub with a mattress over him in case the roof comes off. Just hoping for the best at this point.
