i still love TWIABP live even though the initial effect wore off and there's a lot of oversinging but they're still incredibly good

exactly, it's tough. the first time I saw them like this, I thought it was pretty cool, but now it's just too much for me.

I think TWIABP need to re-tweak their setlist to include a little more variation. Hopefully their next album will continue their experimentation so that their live show will get better as a result. I don't think it was their "performance" per se (because they sounded tight and fantastic), but more the song choices they picked. Granted though, I would have preferred for them to play Harmlessness all the way through.

the only way they could really add variation is by adding more old songs. however, because of the way they perform it's hard to really change things up so much, have to consider all the tuning and interludes and seamless transitions into the performance. also adding some old songs don't make sense due to the lineup changes and stuff. and they're already playing for an hour too

I enjoyed them but they are honestly one of those bands where you've got to zone out almost while listening to. Because there are parts that are really engaging and then others that are dull. But it's to keep on pulling you back in. Probably not something most people are into in the scene.

So damn excited for this tomorrow. Been letting the new IIOI album sit for a while and it might top Proper which I thought couldn't be done. Also so ready to the Sidekicks for the first time.

I'd be so interested to see that tour. I saw IIOI last year in Berlin with TMP and Modern Baseball, and they had the best set out of all of them. I'd love to hear the new songs live. I also saw TWIABP this January, playing with mwY, in Berlin again - it was really really good, but I'd have to agree that their set started to drag a bit after a while. MewithoutYou had a much better selection of songs. I liked all of the songs on both sides, but the combination wasn't really thought out enough, the instrumentals, while very effective, seemed to find a wrong time for them to happen. I'd go see them again though... All in all, on this tour I'd be mostly interested to see Pinegrove!

IIOI is definitely the most technically sound and tight band in the entire scene

I agree with this, but I think the vocalist for Pinegrove is better than Evan. That guy can really sing.

Oh I agree completely, I don't think Evan Weiss is a real good singer.
Musically though IIOI is just a "professional band"

@cwhit @sawhney[rusted] I'd agree with both you, IIOI sounds really tight, the drumming gives a strong core to everything, and it's all really well performed. I gotta say I was in shock when I saw Dylan from Tiny Moving Parts playing his parts live though! So much energy, mixed with accuracy and complex playing, he was jumping and playing tapping parts like it was a freaking nintendo game or something, so so good hah :) However, concerning this one tour - I also admire the skills of the Pinegrove's leader, that's why I'd love to see them live. He's effortless and changes up things all the time, just playing with expression and pure talent, I guess :)

After hearing the new Tiny Moving Parts songs, it seems like their setlist is going to be massive going forward! They're ones I really want to see bad.

Last night was great! Pinegrove is so damn good, The Sidekicks are the best band still, TWIABP almost put me to sleep, and IIOI was really great, the new songs were awesome live.

Hope Sidekicks got some new fans out of this and go on another tour with bands like this

Sidekicks are the only band that I wasn't really impressed by. Not that they didn't put on a good show, its just that I find their entire sound extremely boring and the songs don't "go" anywhere (if you get what I mean).

the TWIABP backlash lately is confusing to me
not enjoying the sidekicks even moreso

According to Evan, they are the "GREATEST ROCK BAND IN AMERICA!"

I think I said this to you before but they have these longer atmospheric songs that I don't think most people are expecting. I realized that they are more of a band I want to be in the back near the sound board hanging out and enjoying as opposed to wanting to go front and center. Most people want the latter in our scene.

    FACT
those shirts sold out too, haha

have those people even listened to TWIABP's music? haha

I feel like they haven't or only in passing. Honestly it's why I don't think I'd ever want to go to some Phish show. I'm sure they are good at their music and make these songs that are nice to hang out to and just relax to. But I like songs that are 3-5 minutes and want that from most music I listen to. So when you go in with those expectations and you get TWIABP and their set where it seems like a song is almost 10 minutes long they are turned off by it more times than not.

Like my brother went to the Columbus show this week and that was basically his impression. He said it they were ok but it get like it dragged on and not really what he was looking for/expecting. They are a pretty experimental/challenging and in the scene if you ask me. So you may super in them but you almost need to understand that when there is a decent contingent hat just don't get it.

I completely agree with this. I thought it was ridiculous when the kids in the show would only shift around for songs from intersections and standards, but when the songs from Proper played they were freaking moshing and stuff. I'm not sure about other shows, but none of the bands on the bill were proper (teehee) for that kind of audience and for what they expected.

  24. cwhit

they're one of the biggest bands in the emo scene though. it's not like they have a niche audience within the scene

I'd agree with that but to the uninformed I can see it like that. Also I think they are bigger in the NE where there seems to be a thriving scene than the rest of the country
