That think-piece about Young Lean I read awhile back was pretty great, put his music in a new perspective. With that said, I don't really like his music much, a couple goodies

 

lean had like 2 really good tracks and another 2 pretty good tracks, haven't heard anything good from him in a couple of years now.

 

I'm doing my own research (a lot of it), and there's a ton of obvious already-known stuff, but I'm wondering if there's anything any of y'all think is specifically interesting (be it good or bad) about the Beastie Boys during the Licensed To Ill era, so '86 or earlier.

As a continental European I'm way to familiar with Lean's shtick, there are like a million rappers like him over here and they all rap about stuff they have nothing to do with. It's makes me very uncomfortable. Maybe he has changed since I first heard of him but whatever.

Also no shots at this piece (which I haven't read, but I might), but there generally are few worse things in the hip hop writing world than American (or even English) pieces on non-UK European hip hop. It's almost always patronizing and full of misconceptions and ethnocentrism.

My favorite one (Juan Epstein, which has an insane 10 year back catalog that mostly is not accessible via podcast apps or really any other convenient way - their awesome Jay Z interview is on YouTube though) is on "hiatus" and some others just faded away (or went to Tidal), but in terms of active ones that do interviews:

A Waste Of Time With ItsTheReal

I also like the occasional episode of Drink Champs and The Combat Jack Show.

Then there is "Mogul: The Life And Death Of Chris Lighty", which is a documentary series about Chris Lighty, and What's Good With Stretch & Bobbito which features guests from all walks of life (including rappers), but very much feels like it is coming from a hip hop perspective (which makes sense given their pedigree). They just interviewed Stevie Wonder.
