like I wouldn't recommend someone listen to no devolucion by Thursday first because it's vitally important to understand how they got to that point.

If a band has a huge discography and you give up after two albums that's your fault

Thursday is another one where I'd recommend going chronologically, but I don't see it as a one size fits all thing

I'd probably check out more from them if this was the first song I ran into of theirs. I don't know what that says about me...

Never said it wouldnt be. But by asking people who are more familiar with the band, I'm avoiding that potential situation altogether.

    This!

Another example: If I started with Rise Against Chronologically I would have quit with The Unraveling and they wouldn't be one of my favorite bands of all time.

I was just making fun of blakebeats love for that album hah. I do think it's smart to go in order but there are several bands where I heard their albums in a random order but I was still able to understand their progression (I heard Kid A before I heard The Bends and I still know how important their progression was)

I mean if a band has like 5+ albums and I don't like album one, I'll listen to a couple songs off album 2, then 3, and so on. Preview a few songs off every album and you should be able to tell if youll like a band or not

See but some people give up after one album that's why I feel it's okay to ask where to start for an artist.

Some people I know will judge literally off of songs to see if they even want to check out an album in the first place so you often recommend their best albums/songs so they have a higher chance to like that artist in the end.

Haha kinda like how most people's (I think) first exposure to NIN is Closer.

I mean going in a random order can work but anytime someone asks me how to get into some band I always have the same answer, go in order. I can't think of any band where I wouldn't say go in order just to hear the evolution.

People who give up on bands with big discogs after one album are petty.

Sure, I guess, but I'm more addressing the casual listener here who is not going to dedicate the time to that sort of thing. Like, my brother, for instance. He's nearly 40 and he seems to struggle to really delve into new music, despite the fact that he loves music more than anything. I've shown him stuff from Science Fiction cause I feel it can click fairly easily.

Yeah, like with Maroon 5. Go in order. But then, just stop after the first one. Just....just stop.

I also think with Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, SoundCloud, and all that its lazy as fuck to ask other people to do the legwork for you to get into a band. Wanna get into a band? Listen to some songs from every album and go from there

Another thing is that some artists don't have much of a progression at all. If someone asked me where to start with like Bayside, Silverstein, or Less Than Jake, I'm just gonna tell them the best one since all their albums are so similar.

I'm not going to agree or disagree with this statement.

But it's more of "this person judges music this way" so what is the best way to get said person to like the artist at hand.

Since we ourselves are not the one getting into the music, we aren't compromising anything and are just trying to find the beat way for Person X to get into Artist Y. Different people have different ways of getting into music/artists and I feel it's good to realize that on person to person basis and use that basis as how to recommend where to start.

I see people on chorus ask where to start with bands that have one album. Like what the fuck

Legwork lol no one's putting in labor to tell me where to start, it's a benefit of being on a forum where everyone knows lots of different music
