yep, hate when an artist does something different but bad and is criticized and someone says "well id rather they experiment than do the same thing"

I get what you guys mean, and think it's fair in most cases. but there are bands that I would prefer to see expirement, even if it means they put out a bad record.

Like bayside, for instance. I think if they just tried to do something new they might land on something good.

even if they come out with something bad, it wouldn't just be another rehash of their old stuff. So at least for that reason I'd be more interested in listening to it.

So for certain bands, and when it comes to my personal interest in their output, I would rather they expiriment than continue to do the same thing.

its not an either or scenario. bayside is boring because they keep doing the same thing over and over again. if they experimented and it was bad.....theyd still be putting out bad records. what i want from bands is good music. how they get to that end goal of good music is up to them. most of the time it requires experimenting. but if they experiment and its bad, its still bad and they dont get brownie points

Not saying anyone has to like Centuries or whatever but it's just frustrating that people don't realize that bands evolve over time and then complain when Weezer makes similar music you know

But like or dislike whatever not my decision

its frustrating when people dont realize that bands evolving doesnt mean i have to automatically think what they evolve into is good

So tell me something awesome Supporter

I'm cool with experimentation and sometimes it fails and it happens

But yeah I don't like when artists use it as a copout/strawman for any criticism of the new music

It's tough though because I'm with Jake in thinking "just make good music" but those artists probably genuinely believe they're making good music when they do that so who knows

    Anyway music is bad

exactly so if a band experiments and i dont like it but someone else does, if they say to me "well what did you want them to stay the same?" thats a bullshit cop out. i can not like a band's experiment

100% agreed. And if experimentation meant it had to be liked every artist would do it

there are certain bands with a consistent pattern that i think are good without being boring. it all differs from band to band and artist to artist. i dont expect the same exact things out of all the music i listen to across the board. its flexible. this isnt a black and white issue.

I'm hoping we can return to this "experimentation =/= good" discussion once the new FOB album drops

Like I'm sincerely thrilled that Fall Out Boy are making the art they want to make, as well as still seeing a ton of long term success after years of being great. But I hope I never have to hear Young and Menace again for the life of me

I appreciate when a band goes out of their comfort zone and nails something new, but I don't care all that much about a lack of experimenting until going back to the well yields diminishing returns.

Like Beach House has made the same record 6 times and it's good and valid every time with maybe one exception.

then you have a band like Fleetwood Mac (Stevie edition) that succeeded at experimentation (tusk!) semi-failed at retreading old ground (mirage) and then really failed (sorry!) at experimentation (tango)

My deal with Taylor isn't that she writes songs about ppl its how she basically tells you enough to know who its about like she's intentionally fairly specific so we all know, used to write hints in the notes to encourage the guessing games, literally once said "this time I'm naming names" and then pretends to act self-righteous when everyone does what she's been wanting them to do, even so far as blaming it on sexism when she actively encourages it. Many other artists don't get it the same because they are more ambiguous. When they're not, like Harry Styles' Carolina and Plain White T's Hey There Delilah, people do dig and stalk and guess who its about.

Its annoying. However, I do think its silly that people complain she writes about boys in general when obv tons of artists write about love.

Do people really think that whole Tswift and Kanye's Mom release date thing is accurate? Like that is so silly, I have no dog in this race and she's done a million other things 'wrong' so I get why people just assume it's true, but like, what? That claim is clearly not based in reality

    No Fun. Not Ever.

Completely agree. Watched them play a set from a balcony in Michigan and the crowd was going insane. For the life of me, I could not understand why.

you like them or you don't. they bring the folk-punk aesthetic and made it far more mainstream/alternative radio scene accessible. they're an incredibly fun band that writes really great pop songs, but if you aren't into that style of music/the vocals then there's no reason for you to enjoy them

It just irks me too because they have toured with Brand New, Kevin Devine, Manchester...all really good bands. Their fans are irritating (which of course is a very general statement) but one I will still make.
