The made up bday in his profile is doing him no favors for sure, but with the amount this album and thread has consumed the last week for me, I can assure you he's like a sophomore in high school.

Not a great post, SM - maybe read a bit more here before diving in on the gender stuff, and prob important to know that 'dangerous crime' and 'rundown' are often used as ways of marginalizing people of color

  7. I mean Camden is 48% African American and about the same amount Latino. If you're old enough to think it's a crime-infested hellhole you're old enough to know that lots of people of color live there and old enough to think twice before marginalizing people

  8. But I get it, I'm being a pain in the ass. I back down. @Sad Messiah feel free to block me or whatever

I don't think you're being a pain in the ass, I just think questioning a teenager's character - rather than the character of the people around them that talk like that and instill those ideas - is a quick way to lose sight of both where that kind of ignorant bullshit stems from, and important and viable paths to eliminating it in the future. At that age, there are more effective ways to make someone realize the error of their (learned) beliefs than by shaming them into compliance. Imo.

  14. My approach would have been different if I had known the poster wasn't actually actually 21. I agree with what you're saying here for sure, and I hope that the message (don't marginalize people or belittle their communities) has not been completely obscured by the hostile and antagonistic messenger (yours truly). But it probably has been, oh well.

    Bed time.

I mean, I don't like music just because it's by males or just because it's by females, I like it because it sounds nice and appeals to me. Several of my all-time favorite songs are by females, like "Fade Into You" by Mazzy Star and "Lie in the Sound" by Trespassers William, and I like artists like CHVRCHES, Lights, Paramore not based on gender, I just like their songs. I don't think I have any female artists in my Top 100 (just going by Last.fm). Might just be a genre thing. Rock is less female-dominated than pop. If I was a huge Pop fan then there'd be more females in my top reaches of favorite artists.

As for the Camden thing, I don't know much about it's racial makeup, I'm from New York and live 120 miles away from it, but it's one of those cities where it has a reputation for being high in crime, hence its mention in Thursday's and Brand New's songs. It's not a racial statement. Off the top of my head, here on Long Island towns like Uniondale, Roosevelt, Wyandanch and Brentwood are known for being dangerous, and they pale in comparison to places like Camden. Is there something to be said about how minorities tend to live in areas high in crime? Likely, but I didn't even bring up anything close to race by labeling Camden as such. I don't know, these are my thoughts, pick them apart, it's fine, I'm going to bed now.

I don't think your posts were malicious. I just think you are lacking perspective, as I was at your age, I assume most of us here were at your age, and I assume most people your age are. On the first front, I'd consider how rock being male dominated is likely not a product of women not liking that genre, but rather of having a harder time getting a foothold in that genre through no fault of their own.

On the second front, at the risk of oversimplifying, I'd look into how people of color and their communities are systemically more likely to be poor, and how that correlates with the rates of crime. I'm honestly not as informed as I'd like to be or awake enough to give you more than that really, but I imagine you'll find if you stick around here long enough you'll figure out why simplifications like calling Camden dangerous are harmful.

I used to dislike female vocalists in rock bands, but that was because of shitty sexism and letting people around me dictate what I should or shouldn't like. Thankfully I've left those thoughts behind.
