I don't feel like you can just "turn on" a record by The National. Much like Radiohead or Brand New or Deftones or such you can and should give your all to the experience. Can't just listen to a song by The National and then reach a solid conclusion like you may a song in the radio. Their work (The National) sinks in over time, gets hooked in your head and pulls you in maaaan.

    Just my thoughts on it.

Probably right. I just didn't have time to delve in and wanted to have some semblance as to what they sound like.

i can agree with that. i feel the same way about a whole lot of things. i can understand the influence but so many things have done what they've done but better, so it doesn't hit as hard

Is The 1975 the band with the most hyperbole surrounding it after Brand New?

I mean, every album upon release gets labeled as "omggggg the best evarrrr!1!1!!" But it seems like with The 1975 it really takes the cake.

And, to be fair, I wasn't raised on the Beatles. I wasn't rasied on Pet Sounds. The albums and artists I find most influential or lasting are the ones I've either grown up with or that hit me at precise moments in my life to leave lasting impacts.

Detatching personal feeling or nostalgia from discussions about art is kinda silly, imo. I'd much rather hear heartfelt, personal stories about how people got into an album and what songs/lyrics stick out than I would a track by track x/10 rating based on production and guitar playing or some shit. I don't care about people's opinions, I like hearing their stories tho

I always lol when someone posts here that a comment will get them killed or hated, and like nobody cares. For the most part if ur respectful and dont try to be weird an edgy about it nobody really says anything. Like of course there are gonna be multiple ppl who dislike brand new or the 1975 or whatever hyped band. Can't please literally everyone and I'd like to think most people know that. But then again I guess I don't track every comment or reply. But nobody's ever really been rude about it to me at least. So the comments seem kinda dramatic sometimes haha. But I'm also like 30 pages behind so don't mind me!!

Be fair, at least Brand New are good...

Although I will admit that there's no getting round She's American. That is a great song.

    Brand New are fucking amazing.

No slight to them with my comment. And really no slight to any band. It's the fans who make the hyperbole, not the band itself (well, except Gunz N Roses since I think Axel said Chinese Demoracy was gonna be the best album ever, and maybe Tom said something hyperbolic when AvA started? Can't remember) but I remember an article about The 1975 retiring the white and pink or whatever and fans were eating that shit up and bestowing praise as if no one had ever thought of that color combination before.

FOB I imagine also used to have rabid hyperbole minded fans but that seems to have cooled since their return and shift in genres.

I think Love Me is the only other one I'd consider. Everything else is just a step up.

The 1975 play circles around Brand New (yes, this is a Counterparts joke but it's also true).

Interestingly, I've had "Same Logic" stuck in my head all night and I haven't listened to the new album since like last Friday. Maybe I'll spin it tonight.

Damn, yes. That album was a trip in 2003, and it's been positively bizarre to see revisionist history from listeners who weren't there at that time render it second tier or even forgettable. I mean, I remember people here likening its level of genre-boundary pushing to Clarity and that not being crazy!

I don't know if it's because I more or less fully migrated to other genres by the time TDAG came out and thus am not nearly as well versed in the records that have further pushed this one forward since, but I've been genuinely surprised over the last few weeks to see how much the appreciation for Deja has slipped around here. I'm not listening to it in heavy rotation like I was in 9th grade, but I don't think I've once put it on since then and questioned why I thought it was so great.

I think that's a lot of why I'm so happy with Science Fiction. Honestly, it feels a lot more like the proper followup to that record than anything they've done in between, the demos included.

Not so much a controversial opnion, but early Coldplay was seriously so good and they showed so much promise. I'm all for bands progressing and changing their sound e.g. Radiohead, but Coldplay just sold their souls I feel. This live performance of Rush of Blood to the Head from 2003 is honestly one of my favorite live recordings ever. The guitar tone and that bridge dismantle me.

I don't know how or why Coldplay became the standard for bad music but it's seriously one of the dumbest things I've seen happen in the music industry in my life.

I don't think Coldplay would receive as much hate if their first two albums didn't exist, but they do and they are very good. Like, if they were a brand new band who put out "Paradise" I don't think anyone would really care. It would still be a garbage song imo, but you wouldn't be able to compare it to something like "We Never Change." With that said, their new song "All I Can Think About is You" isn't great, but feels like a step in the right direction.

Actually, now that I think about it, I remember someone made fun of me cause I liked Coldplay and I was like, "have you even heard their old stuff?" and they hadn't so I showed them and they liked it so, it's not like they were comparing new Coldplay to old so maybe they are just a meme, I don't know.

Here's my unpopular Coldplay opinion, Rush of Blood is their weakest album and Ghost Stories is their best.

I still stand by the first two Coldplay records. They lost my interest at X&Y.
