We need universal automatic registration coupled with a ban on voter ID laws and the institution of mandatory voting. Would solve a lot of problems.

There's been research done to suggest this, especially considering several of the factors that lead to GOP wins are that GOP voters are typically more highly motivated to turnout (especially in non-presidential years) and the GOP has engaged in a decades-in-the-making voter suppression campaign to prevent as many people of color from voting as possible. It will actually probably mean more going forward as the country becomes less white; the USA is projected to be majority non-white within the next 20 years or so and if the majority of those voters lean left-of-center then it will make a huge difference.

So in the meantime we have the chicken/egg situation of needing to get the voters to combat voter suppression in order to get the voters...
