That happened to me with Something Corporate's Leaving Through the Window. I went to Best Buy near my work to get Finch's What It Is To Burn and they were having a sale where you could get both of them for $10; I think WIITB was $12 or something on its own. I had only heard "If You C Jordan" from SoCo on a Drive Thru sampler and thought it was terrible (still do) but figured if I didn't like the album I could give it to my little sister. Much to my surprise, I loved it and Andrew McMahon has become one of my all-time favorite, and most important, artists – my daughter is named Cecilia partially because of him/his music.

 

I don't like ranking songs for this album but In The Water def has to be up there for me. One of my personal favorites up there with Same Logic as some of the best on SF.

 

I think I agree with you here. In the water is a song I'd play for someone if they asked either "what do they sound like?" or "is the new one any good?"

 

Hmm, I dont think it was high expectations. Truthfully, none of the 3 albums hit the expectations the bands set with their previous releases. But even then, thats not exactly an issue either as Daisy wasnt as good as TDAG, Plastic Beach not as good as Demon Days, and Evil Friends is not as good as Satanic Satanist or ITMATC. I dont expect a band to release their best album every time, but I also dont expect them to release their worst one either.

My issue with Humanz was it didnt really feel like a Gorillaz album. It was more like a showcase of all the features they were able to get instead of just using them sparingly. There were just too many.

Woodstock was just missing a lot of the creativity that PTM has always had in their albums. It was just kinda "paint by numbers".

And with SF, it just didnt grab me, I dont feel anything when I listen to it, its just missing something, that Brand New energy.

Anyways, I am glad people like all 3 albums, just sucks that I didnt haha.

 

Yeah for sure and also maybe Waste too. My gf's current favorite track.

 

451 has been pulling me in a ton lately. The song just completely rips.

(And I won't lie I hear the FOB comparison there in the chorus, even though it feels weird to compare those two.)

I just realized I've never listened to "Sealed To Me". Is there a good live recording of it out there somewhere?

Jealous of anyone who discovered BN or JEW when they were 8. I was pretty firmly entrenched in Britney Spears greatest hits and the Cheetah Girls.

Crazy because i now know what i heard on the fb livestream for like 2 seconds was 451. Once i knew it was real and things were happening i stopped listening but ya its funny that short snippet alone i was like, fuck this sounds soooo good and different for them i cant wait to hear the album. And now everytime i listen to it, i think back to that day and the flood of emotions and excitement that came along with it. What a day that was and what a week that was. Unforgettable.

 

YFW came out my junior year of high school. At some point I saw a music video for Jude Law and a Semester Abroad (possibly on The Box?) and was immediately hooked, having already gotten into that type of music. Deja came out my sophomore year of college and DAG the year I graduated, so it's easy to feel like I've grown into adulthood with these guys. It's pretty wild to get this impactful of an album from them that I connect with all these years later.

 

I think thats why 451 has to be a favorite of mine. There's already such a sentimental and nostalgic value attached to it.

 

Maybe I'll post my Jimmy Eat World story in their feed. I'm still watching the live video. It's incredible we have a band like this in our lifetime. (I know it's corny. I went for a run earlier so my endorphins are going off)

 

I havent seen that video in years, but I always remember one of the guys running in socks, then he jumps and slides across a dresser. Me and my cousin had to try that after we saw it lol

 

So, I realized this thinking over yesterday and today.


Regardless of what 4 albums we choose, a lot of us can agree that Brand new has 4 masterpieces or will think that in the future if they want to give Science Fiction more time before making that claim.

What occurred to me, is that Brand New has released 4 of the best albums of all time. And I'm not just talking good or great albums. I'm talking about the BEST albums of all time.

So I sat down and thought to myself- has any other band done that?

The answer I came up with: No. No band other than Brand New has released 4 of the best albums of all time in my opinion. Brand New is truly a legendary band and it makes me sad that we won't have them around for much longer but their music and legacy will live on forever!

id say 4 of the best albums of our generation or of their genre/scene, but i certainly cant get behind YFW being one of the greatest albums ever made haha, however much love i have for that record.

 

That's a little hyperbolic. TDAG and possibly this could be considered in the top 5 of bands that emerged from this scene, but to assign anything more to it is a little short sighted.

first CDs i had bought for me were paramore's riot! and FOB's IOH on the same day, then i actively went on release day to get FTSK's underdog alma mater and that changed everything for me, lol
