I was a freshman in high school when YFW came out. I remember buying it and listening to it nonstop.

Brand New just has tremendous consistency throughout their career. Say what you want about these one off singles from the last few years, I've loved them, but if they are the songs that "tarnish" their discography, I'm okay with it. I'd take everything post YFW over YFW itself, and even then, I can enjoy YFW on occasion. It just isn't to the same caliber of songwriting of what came after, and that's also okay, it's still a fun jam that reminds me of taking off down an empty old country road out of the parking lot of my high school.

I remember thinking it just sounded like noise when I first heard my brother listen to it. But one day I took Diary to school in my discman cause I thought it would make me look cool having something no other kids heard of, and doing that I started to really listen to it and ended up loving it. haha It made me insufferable when "emo" started being used to describe like hot topic scene kids and bands though, cause I would fight people about it all the time

I think 8 is when i got my first CD player, so i was listening to nothing but Creed and NOW 8.

EDIT: no wait, that's when i was 10. it was all about NSYNC when i was 8 i bet.

I had Now 1 when I was ten. The track list to that CD is wonderful. It had "Barbie Girl" followed directly by "Karma Police" HAHA

My first CD was NOW 4, which I wanted for All The Small Things. Unfortunately don't have a good intro to brand new story, they just got lumped in with all the lime wire downloads. Though I did receive TDAG from a crush for Christmas (who would often use deja away messages obvi) so that association is permanent.

I dont really have a BN origin story. i remember my friend buying DE because he liked the cover, but we were too young to really "get it", and i had a burned copy of it for a long time that i think i made it through once. i remember watching the music videos for quiet things and sic transit gloria, but they never grabbed me enough to make me seek the album out any more. it didnt click with me until i found you wont know in 2013 (i know, i know) and thought it was awesome, then took a dive into TDAG and Daisy, and havent looked back since. im not a super fan like a lot of people, but i sure do love Science Fiction.

In the liner notes for Deja they listed some bands to listen to like lifetime, sigur ros etc. Well for this album i would love them to include what inspired them music/movies whatever. I doubt that will happen (ruins the mystery that they like to keep so much) but it's fun to think about. It's crazy that I'm more interested in knowing the movies I'm sure they either watched or were influenced by. I mean 137 alone is fascinating but countless other songs I get such a heavy cinematic feel and I love that medium so much that it makes me so curious to know what they like and were influenced by if anything.

Edit: The clip at the end of can never be heaven makes me think of the movie Carnal Knowledge

I didn't hear YFW first. I went to a cingular store to get a phone. There was a best buy next door. I think Deja was $7. I thought it was good and wondered what YFW sounded like. A friend said pop punk, don't bother

back in the day my older brother would drive me to school, he intro'd me to a lot of music including BN and I got YFW and Deja from him, and started listening to them pretty obsessively.

this was like right after TDAG came out but we didn't have it or really know anything about it; one day i was looking at some random dude's myspace and thought the pic on his profile was super creepy and cool and went on a mission to find out what it was; turns out it was the TDAG cover art, and that's how that happened.

i am mistakenly quoted as calling "Not The Sun" the best song of 2008 in my high school yearbook and the sheer inaccuracy of everything about that haunts me to this day

    i hate brand new

    i love brand new

i am so happy this record exists

I listened mostly to rap/hip hop in middle school: Wu-Tang and 2Pac were (still are) clear favorites. Then, through my mom, I got into Jagged Little Pill and (What's the Story) Morning Glory, and after that it was Metallica (Black album), Everclear (So Much For the Afterglow), Foo Fighters (The Colour and the Shape), Counting Crows (August and Everything After), and Dave Matthews Band (Crash).

I first discovered Brand New through AP way back during the YFW (sorry for bringing it up!) days.

2017 has been the year of disappointment for me haha. 3 of my favorite bands (Gorillaz, Portugal the Man, Brand New) released new albums after long hiatuses, and I didn't like any of them, with the exception of a song or 2 from each.

Since everyone is sharing little stories. The way I first listened to Brand New was that I walked into a Best Buy, saw the cover for The Devil and God, liked it, and bought it. I had no clue that what I bought was not only gonna be one of my favorite bands, but also one of my favorite albums of all time. I still distintcly remember everything about that moment.

I then went back and listened to Deal Entendu and Your Favorite Weapon.

Sorry to hear that. I love both the PtM and BN releases. Do you think it's a case of having (too) high expectations? Maybe with some time/distance from the releases you'll grow to love them.

But there's been plenty of good to great music this year, and plenty of promising releases to come.

Heh, weren't people worried Taylor would release an album and interfere with Brand New?

She announced a new abum, but it's not out til November.

my experience is very similar with one of my favorite albums of all time, Anberlin's Cities. i only got it because the deluxe was stupid cheap at best buy.
