i love the difference between bbc.com and cnn.com. BBC "Guam beach goers unphased" (shows video of everyone trying to remain calm). CNN "we could be gone tomorrw" under the headline of they would only have a 14 minute warning.

For real. Americans don't know what war is like. Americans didn't experience the devastation that, say, Europe experienced after WWII and there's zero regard for the lives of South Koreans or the Japanese so it's like, why not go into another war? Maybe the economy will rebound like it did in the '50s and America can pat itself on the back for being so developmentally advanced compared to the countries we bombed.

i get so angry every time i think about how rosily we think about the internment camps for instance. like the inhumanity of them just is so transparent and we're all like "oh whatever we were nervous"

  6. People think rosily about internment camps? They're one of the biggest stains on the country's (dark and fucked up) history.

i mean, i dont think people give FDR enough shit for them given he's one of our most popular presidents. they're not thought of rosily i guess as much as ignored, forgotten, not understood and internalized for how we think about profiling threats today.

  9. It's virtually line one in his bio, he still is one of the "best" presidents, but it's not like that goes unlooked/criticized.

We must be reading different things. They're brought up by most people I read on the topic. There was a huge uproar just a few months ago when someone suggested on some cable show we should think about using them again.

I think what Spencer means is, it is acknowledged, but not to the extent it should be. It's sort of like how people intellectually acknowledge how bad slavery was, but it is situated as an aberration, rather than a constitutive element of what makes this country what it is.

I mean Ted Cruz basically wanted Muslim internment camps/ghettos

I mean, I don't think anyone can say with a degree of intellectual honesty that we actually come to grips with our actions against non-white people in any real way, which is why the problems recur.

I also hate that it's just common practice now that every bizarre sentence he spews is just cast as sarcasm or a joke. I'd get it if these are lighthearted conversations but they are far from it.
