the over the top comparisons for music you don't like always seem cringey to me. Like the 14 year old kid who just got into AC/DC saying he'd rather cut his ears with broken glass and be deaf for life than hear one Lady Gaga song or whatever.

That joke should twist by now and always refer to the Smooth by Santana meme, which is a good song. Example:

I’d rather listen to the Grammy-Award winning 1999 hit Smooth by Santana feat. Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty than mid-2000's scene power pop

I always had a bit of a soft-spot for Mayday Parade, as far as mid-2000s scene power pop goes. I liked their first EP and album a decent amount. Didn't keep up with them after that, but those two releases are pretty solid (the EP maybe moreso).

And if The Academy Is count as mid-200s Scene Power Pop, they are heads and shoulders above the rest for me. Or at least Almost Here is.

I heard a Guided By Voices album for the first time yesterday (Bee Thousand I think it was?) and it was nearly intolerable. Wtf is this band

  6. Hills And Valleys is a great Rocket Summer song

I've never fucked with The Academy Is, but This Providence is kinda in that realm and I definitely still back all three of their full lengths. The Audition was a fun one too but just haven't aged as well for me.

I was trying to remember the name of a band that I can only picture the cover of the album from, I figured out it was Farewell from the related artists to Powerspace, two pretty remarkably forgettable scene pop bands

Also led me to this 8 year old jam:

There were so many bands who never broke out and toured a little and just broke up, I wonder where they're at now

Man I remember that last Farewell album getting a lot of traction on AP.net, people loved them for whatever reason. I could never get behind that band at all.

It also took me until like 2013 or something to realize the forums were where the real party was at though, so maybe it was just all the front page news APers that were hyping it

Thinking of mid-2000 pop/rock/whatever acts, I never understood the love Cartel seemed to get. (think that's the name of the band) I had friends in high school who were heavy into metal and shit who even gushed about how good Cartel was and all I ever heard was bland shit from that band.

Cartel is the one band where it can be honestly said that Dr. Pepper ruined them.

  19. The bubble ruined them for sure, so gimmicky. Still blows my mind that people actually believed they wrote and recorded that entire album in a bubble over the course of a few days haha

Cartel isn't much better than a lot of the other pop punk/pop rock bands from around that time but they're still pretty good. Will has a really good voice

Say Anything (Else) and Honestly are dope songs. Never got into anything else by them.

Does All Time Low count? I think that I probably listened to them more than any other band being discussed in here and a lot of their songs hold up pretty well in terms of being solid pop songs.

    That song ruled too

    No Fun. Not Ever.

Never listened to Cartel or All Time Low. Just saw their ads a lot back when I had a subscription to Alternative Press.

extremely boring take on pop-punk. Nothing musically or lyrically interesting whatosever.

the Powerspace album is easily the catchiest, most energetic record of that entire era. TAI is also great

Say Anything - Is A Real Boy
    Northstar - Pollyanna
    Brand New - Deja Entendu
The Early November - The Room's Too Cold
    Thursday - Full Collapse

will always be the defining albums of that time frame to me. And yeah, Victory / Reprise / Fueled By Ramen bands generally got a lot more promotion than others, but I honestly don't think FOB, TBS, MCR, TAI etc were as strong of songwriters.
