Yeah there's nothing fuckboy-ish about that song. He's processing the aftermath of the relationship in a way that suggests he's just trying to cope with the reality of the situation, which is that deep down he knows that he isn't better for her than the new guy is. That song really shows how much more mature Dan is when writing about these kinds of things compared to, like you said, TSSF who go completely in the other direction. The one where everything is the girl's fault and how dare she move on when their relationship ended.

Agreed. The whole song gets kind of flipped when he says "I know he's what you need". He recognizes that what he's saying isn't even true, it's just what he selfishly feels.

Fuck, the meaning of that song just hit me really hard right now haha... I'm in a similar situation right now and it sucks but at the same time I know being mature and respectful is the only right way to go about it.

The Upsides in general is a lot more mature than its given credit for. Theres some funny and crass lines but theyre juxtaposed with some really crushing and wonderful lines. the lyric thats always stuck out to me since the day i heard it is in Its Never Sunny In South PA

I can tell you that the world looks bleak from where I'm sitting at the bottom of the city, but no matter where you sit the skyline looks the same

Thats such a clever way of basically saying "you dont understand what im going through, but its ok because i dont really expect you to"

Yeah especially compared to, not only their contemporaries, but also to what came before it (GSOI). For the most traditionally "pop-punk" album in the band's catalogue, it's incredibly mature in handling the themes it tackles.

You didn't pick a winner for Hostels & Brothels vs New Years With Carl Weathers. If you don't choose I can't count your votes.

    *Edited to give my reasons*

Everything I Own Fits In This Backpack - That bridge though

I Was Scared And I'm Sorry - The Sarah Marshall reference is awesome

Leavenhouse 11:30 - Probably the best of their b-sides/rarities

It's Never Sunny In South Philadelphia - Probably their most pop-punk song title to date (minus GSOI) and I love it

This Party Sucks - I played this song in my head at basically every party I've attended

All My Friends Are In Bar Bands - First TWY song I ever listened to

Hostels & Brothels - Reminds me to listen to my fathers advice more

My Last Semester - I just graduated college and I listened to this 100,973 times during that last semester

Choosing between WSP and Bar Bands in round one is crap.

my vote goes to Me Vs The Highway as far as song that should win the whole thing but we'll see who knows.

I could see Came Out Swinging winning only because its kinda their "Understand In A Car Crash" or "Ebolorama" its a massive fan favorite, they always play it live, and hell its even gotten a little mainstream success albeit only briefly.

The Upsides is the album I listen to the least of the trilogy, but I imagine that will be changing this fall as I enter my last semester of college.

As of right now we've got 22 votes (I'll probably abstain until the final count so not counting me). Here's the turnout so far but we've got till 5PM EST tonight till I close the polls. A couple of these probably won't change but there's a few tight ones with Leavenhouse/WWBY and MLS/New Hope

"Dynamite Shovel" (3) vs "Everything I Own Fits In This Backpack" (19)

"I Was Scared And I'm Sorry" (18) vs "Hey Thanks" (4)

    "Leavenhouse 11:30" (10) vs "We Won't Bury You" (12)

"Logan Circle" (9) vs "It's Never Sunny In South Philadelphia" (13)

"Melrose Diner" (15) vs "This Party Sucks" (7)

"Washington Square Park" (14) vs "All My Friends Are In Bar Bands" (8)

"Hostels & Brothels" (13) vs "New Years With Carl Weathers" (9)

"My Last Semester" (12) vs "Logan Circle: A New Hope" (10)

Why was WSP and Bar Bands going against each other?! Come on, that should be the final two. This is going to make me revisit The Upsides today.

"I Was Scared And I'm Sorry"
"Leavenhouse 11:30" - The easiest decision for me to make. It reminds me so much of the local music scene I grew up in, and my favorite TWY live performance was seeing them play this (I think for the first time ever) in my hometown after I moved away.
"It's Never Sunny In South Philadelphia"
    "Melrose Diner"
"Washington Square Park" - Definitely the toughest choice, but it's the song that hooked me on TWY and still my favorite song to hear live.
"New Years With Carl Weathers" - On some days this is my favorite song on The Upsides.
    "My Last Semester"

listening through the upsides for the first time in a long time: what is the order of the guest vocals of bar bands Matty > Dave > Shane > Jamie > Nik? Who's doing the Suitcase reprise?

I believe it's Matty, Dave, Shane, Jamie, Nik, then Soupy again. I'm not 100% sure on "We moved on again" but it sounds like either MattBrasch or Shane to me. I think Nick O'Neill (From Sink or Swim RIP) and Charlie Saxton do background/gang vocals.
