Echoing sentiments about LP basically being my musical foundation. My mom, sister, and I were living in a bad situation around the time Hybrid Theory came out and we all shared the news today - I was getting choked up talking about it and had to hang up the phone. Lots of memories tied to those songs. The world lost a great musician today. Meteora and HT on repeat right now.

 

This article has some really tough quotes to read from Chester about how the new album was a big turning point for him. But it's a good read. Warning: it will make you sad.

I feel like Linkin Park has always been a gateway band, despite often striving to be more.
And the rightful public outpouring of grief shows why being a gateway band is so powerful, and certainly nothing for any artist/s to be ashamed of.
It's one thing for adults to claim your music is great. It's another thing to inspire people at a younger age when your influence can be stronger.
Also shows the line of thinking that people can't be as passionate about massively popular bands is plain wrong. Having a wide reach means you will pick up a lot of casual fans, but artists will always have their diehard supporters as well.

This shit has me so sad. I think it's because someone who was in so much pain brought true happiness to a lot of people in their toughest times. I remember being 12 years old and having kids who would pick on me for whatever reason, but then they found Linkin Park cool and, because I listened to them, somehow I found myself not being the kid who was picked on anymore. I felt so much more confident and like I could be myself. It brought kids of multiple musical interests together and opened the door to explore the world of music.

 

One of the best live bands you could ever ask to see. Chester was the best at what he did, and there's a reason Linkin Park has been close to the biggest rock band of my generation. This sucks so much.

Unlike a lot of people my age I was never really super into them aside from their singles (never actually heard a full album before) but this is still hitting me oddly hard, so I can't imagine how big fans are feeling right now. In a lot of ways I think this is probably the biggest death in contemporary music so far, this feels a lot more...different than some of the other recent deaths

 

This is pretty weird man. I know you're probably not trying to be a dick but maybe do not rank the deaths of contemporary (what does that even mean? Post 2000?) musicians.

 

Wasn't really an attempt at ranking... I was more saying that this feels like the biggest music death for this current generation. Seeing a lot of people say stuff on social media that don't usually comment on celebrity deaths

I know that's not exactly the most important thing to talk about it now but I'm kind of just thinking out loud with that post

 

@tdlyon For this current generation of white kids that mostly like Rock maybe. Prodigy just died and it fucked people up. Different deaths matter to different people and some demographic groups happen to be in the majority and/or more vocal on the internet. I just think throwing around statements like that that go beyond the personal level (as in "this hit me the hardest") at moments like this is kind of weird. No shots at you. We should probably end this discussion now for the sake of the other people in this thread.

 

Up until now, I considered Good Charlotte to be my gateway band into rock music, but with all of the reflecting I've been doing today, I've actually realized that it was Linkin Park who bridged the gap between my interest in hip-hop and rock music. In middle school (2000-2003), I was obsessed with late 90's R&B and hip-hop (Aaliyah, Nas, Nelly, Destiny's Child, 3LW, Maya, Ashanti, TLC, et al.) and had a childhood best friend who was really into Linkin Park. Our hangouts largely consisted of us talking in her room, listening to Hybrid Theory and rocking out. We both had slightly rocky home lives at that time and would escape through their music. I don't know why I've never considered Hybrid Theory to be in my top 10 albums but now I'm thinking that it definitely should be because it's a great album.

This is the first musician death that I've been really devastated by but I'm eternally grateful that I had the chance to meet Chester (LP did an autograph signing at my hometown Best Buy in Dublin, CA in 2004) and see Linkin Park live earlier that year in San Jose. They're one of the best bands I've ever seen live and I remember watching in awe of Chester's vocal abilities, hitting notes that I didn't realize he was capable of hitting. I'll be sitting with his passing for a while, and now I'm trying to get back in touch with my childhood friend because we bonded so heavily over LP but haven't been in contact for a couple years now. RIP, Chester. You helped so many through your music .

Not including a Beatles greatest hits compliation, Hybrid Theory and Meteora are the 4th and 5th best-selling albums of the 21st Century, and sold 30million and 27million copies respectively (with Minutes to Midnight the 13th and sold 20million). Only Eminem and Adele sold more. I guess I'm posting this because I've been ignorant as to just how big of an impact LP made on music in general, not just rock music. Numbers like that are the elite of the elite; a staggering achievement and no matter what happens with the future of LP they can all be so proud that their art reached/influenced so many.

20 million copies of an album sold in 2007 is super impressive. Like you said, these guys should be super proud of all they've accomplished over the years. I do wonder though what the future holds for LP now that Chester is gone

 

I'd say they are done it wouldn't be right imo. Of course other bands have carried on. I'd be game for a benefit concert for mental health awareness though.

It just sucks that they put so much into that album, personal stuff that you can definitely hear - and it was just dismissed as "corporate sell-out shit, play Crawling" - I understand music critics have a job to do, but I think people have just gotten so vicious - like these bands personally owe them something because of their support. You go to a show and boo your "favorite band" because they aren't playing the songs from 17 years ago you want to hear? Guess what, they grew up and evolved - apparently you didn't.
