John McClane may be my favorite track of theirs. Such a fantastic opener.

 

I need to revisit Hebrews

 

that ending is so catchy "ill be the ripley to your john mcclane" is such a deliriously fun but also sweet line.

Hebrews is much better on revisit ive even come around to liking Nibble Nibble even if the whole metaphor is kinda creepy

Lyrics are weird though

 

They are for sure. But by Max/SA standards...it's not very surprising, and it's not enough for me to dismiss the song. I just love the energy that track brings as a closer.

 

Also found this regarding the song's meaning. Doesn't justify the metaphor, but it's interesting to know what he was thinking nonetheless.

 

I feel like I say this every couple pages or so but I will always stan for Hebrews. Underrated album, lot of great songs on there.

 

yeah it helps to have that context for sure. much like Hebrews title track/Died A Jew, Max has said that the idea behind those songs was to speak up and speak out on behalf of minorities and, since Max is jewish, feeling a sense of comradery between himself and other oppressed minorities like african americans, native americans, etc unfortunately theres a couple lines in each that come across as pretty offensive as unintentional as it may be.

 

The positivity towards IDTII over the last couple pages has my questioning everything I thought I ever knew about life (not because people shouldn't be positive - I like the album - but because it's such a change in what I thought was the consensus opinion)

 

IDTII is awful as a cohesive piece of music imo, but does have one or two tracks that I'm legitimately a fan of and then a handful more that I like well enough. Anarchy will always be my least favorite SA record, I remember Max pumping it up as his "dark angry baby" and then it was a love record with a smattering of the worst attempts to win back "old" fans I could even imagine. The Stephen Hawking, Burn a Miracle, and Night's Song are the only songs on that record I can remember liking.

 

I still think it's pretty awful and never go back to it

 

"Give a Damn," "17 Coked Up Speeding," "Rum," "Jiminy," and "The Bret East Ellis School of Witchcraft & Wizardry" are all songs I still really enjoy.

 

I think I like Admit it Again more than any song on IDTII and I hate Admit It Again.

 

On one hand, I'm glad that people seem to have turned around on Anarchy, My Dear. On the other hand, even though I've always enjoyed the record, I can be happy just knowing that most fans love "Night's Song."

 

Night's Song is the only track since the s/t I've liked

 

I think IDTII is absolute trash. But I've spent too much time on that conversation, so I don't participate when the topic comes up. I'm glad people enjoyed it. Besides 17 Coked Up and Speeding, I revisit nothing.

 

Anybody else love Overbiter from Anarchy, My Dear?

 

I overlooked it until I saw it live (I believe on the Rarities tour). They extended the outro a little bit, but the live setting really enhanced the instrumentation. The second verse is a highlight of the discography for me.

 

The bass on the whole album is great. It's especially on display for Overbiter. Love that song

 

Listened to Hebrews last night. Push is the track I always forget how good it is. Also Jeremy from TA shouldn't work so well on a track like Lost My Touch. Though he does.

 

I've been revisiting SA this week, and have been really enjoying it. In Defense... is still my favourite, although there are a couple of duds on there I think it's just so chock-full of interesting musical ideas and perfomances that I let it off having a couple of bad songs. ...Is A Real Boy is a very close second, followed by all of the early rarities stuff, self-titled and then the other three basically together. I think Hebrews has some really interesting songwriting, with Push being a highlight, but musically it doesn't do an awful lot for me (although having guitars is unlikely to have significantly rectified that for me). On the other hand IDTII has some music that really interests me, but some of the lyrics really do fall short. I can't defend an album that contains the line "Want y’all to cum when you hear this" no matter how hard I try. Hilariously bad. But there's definitely heart in the album, usually in the quieter moments like the second half of Attaboy (*shudder* i still can't get over the intro to that song), which endear it to me more than I think it has for others. Anarchy, My Dear Just does nothing for me, it feels like a watered down attempt of a "punk" album, and the fact that Admit It Again exists just... let's not even talk about that.

Anyway I'm done, sorry for writing an essay but I'm just really happy to learn this band - especially their earlier stuff - still means as much to me as my angsty teenage self haha.

 

i agree with a lot of this haha. yeah that line in the closer on IDTII just makes me cringe but i think its meant to be funny. Admit It Again is also hilariously bad and feels like the biggest self own in this scene, like Max completely forgot the original point of Admit It. its still catchy though so i tolerate it. I do seem to like AMD, Hebrews, and IDTII more than you but i totally get what youre saying especially with the lyrics on IDTII
