While there are softer stuff like hope, there are drums in every song and every song is really rhythmic so in that way it's very different than hope. The album is both melodic and rhythmic which is what drew me to it on my two listens.

I actually think a lot of people will like it bc it's really really good music. Whether it's heavy or not it's clearly well thought out, well performed, and well executed. I think it's an album that crosses genre lines

i mean isnt all music essentially rhythmic and melodic? i also dont think this like crosses genres or anything. its good indie rock. real good indie rock.

also idk if this has been said by jason or anyone but the loss of Freeman isnt really felt on here. not to discredit him or anything, hes a great musician and songwriter, but andy and robert definitely pick up his slack as far as the keys/organs/synths/harmonies go

Rhythmic in the way that it contains a ton of polyrhythms and syncopation

lol yes teebs i know what rhythmic means i am a musician who also has access to The Internet. describing this as rhythmic and melodic seems redundant since, well, most music is. most music has a lot of polyrhythms and syncopation no?

"This is a PRE-ORDER item. A BLACK MILE TO THE SURFACE will be released on July 28 2017 and you will receive your order on or before the release date if ordered by July 21 2017 in the North America."

I assume that means it will go in the mail on or around July 22 and it is according to how quick USPS gets it to you.

went through all the albums heres some quickfire thoughts on each

NSA: should be considered a full fledged album imo, not quite as good as what follows but its not a drastic dip in quality either and it has some great tunes

ILAV: basically tied with METN to me. has the bands best opener and closer imo and possibly their best song with "Where Have You Been"

METN: a top 10 record for me probably. heavier, more aggressive, but still has moments where it just breathes and slows the pace. cements Andy as one of the best lyricists in our scene

SM: better with time, this is the album ive fluctuated my opinion on the most. its got some great songs but weird production choices and Andy gets reeeeally abstract with his lyrics sometimes but i dont mind it

Cope/Hope: ideally id mix tracks from each of these into one 11 track album but instead i listened to both. love em, its rare to have the same album complement to totally different sound spectrum's and emotional states. i prefer individual tracks as opposed to the albums as a whole but theyre very enjoyable

ABMTTS: after about 10 or so listens and me just pulling up notepad to write down lyrics i catch as well as general thoughts, id say this is clocking in at around my 3rd favorite MO release and "Lead, SD" might take the top spot for the bands best song imo.

all in all this band is ok i guess idk never really listened to them sounds like bad grunge music 2/10

i hear Tom Delonge was the producer and guitarist for at least half the tracks so id give it a solid "almost as good as box car racers album" out of 10

I think enough time has passed now that I almost completely forget what the songs sounded like, I just know I loved it. It will be fun hearing it again after so much time away from it.

There's something that bugs me about both the main riffs/choruses to "The Gold" and "The Alien" - both nice songs, but the melodic pattern is almost identical. Take the chorus to "The Alien" for example - 1st bar starts off major ("Do you need"), 2nd bar goes to relative minor ("me"), 3rd bar goes one note below the 1st-bar major note ("Do you need"), and 4th bar returns to the same root note as the 1st bar ("me"). The riff throughout "The Gold" does the exact same thing.

Is anyone else hearing this or am I out to lunch? I find it a little irksome to the ear when the 1st and 4th bars are identical if there's room for something more interesting there.
