100% on board with the posts above. I mean shit, if we, as a community, didn't value what other people say about music none of us would be here talking right now, right? Personally, I love reading about what other people have to say about a record beforehand - it's lead to me listening to almost every single one of my favourite albums. Shit, I would never have heard Home, and by consequence of me listening to it and going mad about it none of my irl friends would've even heard about em had it not been for the sheer hype and love for the album on AP before it was released.

On the subject, I appreciate the sentiment Christian was trying to make - Make your own opinion of the album, experience it without prior expectation etc - but they kind of fucked that particular sentiment up that when they streamed half of it live, you know? I'm going into this album with a premeditated opinion of what it's going to sound like already because of that, so by putting that out there, they've screwed with that new album "lie on your bed, roll up in a ball and have a good hearty cry" experience already right? It's a nice sentiment for sure, to have this personal little bubble of a first listen to an album, but in a world where we have so much information and ability to communicate at hand and at our disposal, it would be a damn shame not to use it. The whole radio silence thing only holds steam for so long - Unless you're Brand New, in which case there'd likely still be conversation about the possibility of LP5 a century from now - but there's only so far conversation about one or two songs and a preorder can go, and people who have the album and talk about it make that wait for it just that little bit more bearable, yet paradoxically significantly more unbearable. Hahaha.

Words from other people are such a strong pull to get potential fans to listen and to deny that as a whole to make it a personal singular experience is... pretty silly, to be honest. As much as I can appreciate the sentiment, I'm not a fan of it. Music is a group thing that gets people you'd never even think of coming together to... well, come together and talk about it.

I listen to Player Piano at least three times a day - love the synths buried down in the mix, gives it such a powerful melancholic contrast

this is going to be a special album, even moreso than the last one

 

It took me awhile to come around to part 1 but now it is a top 5 song for me. The sound is just so light and carefree. It really embodies the concept of an album about love. I hope part of that sounds is on the album!

@Jason Tate its a shame that the music writer comment turned you off of the record. I totally understand it but it seemed like you really loved it a few months ago. I could imagine being pretty upset in your situation though. I also believe that your hype probably helped bring in some Presales since people respect your opinion.

Unrelated note I'm pretty sure sun will be the next single just bc they have been playing it live for so long

 

sun is really special in the context of the record, so idk. two deliverances would be a good song to release first imo, it's one of the catchiest songs they've ever written

 

i think it didn't really turn me off on the record as much as it made me less interested in reaching for it or talking about it. The talking about it part is easy to explain - like if I should be tuned out, then ok, I don't see much reason in diverting my energy or limited time to talking/writing about it, right? Like that just kinda makes sense. But it also just ... I dunno what the word is ... it just kinda sucked to read and think about and all that. It made me less ... excited. The album's not all of a sudden not incredible. The band didn't all of a sudden morph into anything different. But I do think I changed a little. I became less ... enthused. Which, hey, maybe is a really good thing (and exactly what the band wanted) so win/win/win and the outcome is more people walking into it with less expectations. I dunno. I'm just trying to be more in tune with my own thoughts and feelings about everything and at least transparent as well over the past few months. I think that Christian's main point (and he messaged me about this later and I've been really bad on Twitter and my DMs are overflowing with people I need to respond to) was that there's a boastful nature in the privilege of some that have advances that many find off-putting, and to that, I don't disagree at all. It's made me much more conscious of where and when I say anything to try and avoid that very thing. But there's also a state where a band can get to that allows them to be big enough to be more aware of that (back and forth we go!) because there are other bands that would maim for me to write even a few sentences about their music. It's an interesting dynamic.

I'd write more but I just was cutting open a container of salsa dip stuff and cut my left thumb so the bandaid on it doesn't let me bend it very well — which makes typing kinda annoyingly hard. So. I think it's time for a movie and beer and scowling at my hand. Hope this kinda made sense and no one is too mad at me tomorrow morning when I re-read this.

Also totally agree with @MFA about the live streaming part. Heh.

They're always very well thought out, and they always seem to provoke thought and conversation. i dont think youve done anything that should make you feel bad. you rule!

I am very excited for this record, but Piano Player just doesn't do it for me after these few weeks with it.

 

I think there's a lot of truth to the fact that many music writers in general are too boastful of advances. Not saying any names, but there are a few people I follow on Twitter that always seem to report exactly what showed up in their email that day and to me, that always comes off as "hey, look how much cooler I am than you" rather than "hey, I've heard this record and it's really, really good. You should pre-order it, see the band on tour, etc. because trust me, it's worth the investment." I've never gotten the former vibe from Jason at all, but I can see why Christian would be jaded about music journalists in general talking about advances. It's *always* annoying to see tweets and posts about advances from people who just don't give a shit about the band and would rather play Mr. Cool Guy with their followers.

 

I was a little lukewarm on Piano Player when I first listened to it, but now I adore it.

 

Not trying to sound like a dick here, and I know it's probably not completely up to them, but if the band doesn't want people talking about their album maybe they shouldn't be sending out advances 3+ months ahead of the release?

 

I think the point is that the people should talk about the album not the fact they just physically have the album and rubbing it in the faces of non music bloggers. Say substantial things about the art.

 

Maybe it's somebody else's call at Tiny Engines to send out advances? I'm not sure, just food for thought. I do agree though that maybe the whole issue is with people who seem to brag about how they got an advance.

I also haven't read what Christian said (I guess it was in an interview). Can I get a link?
