I get that it's kinda dark but I don't get Brand New vibes from this, more in the Citizen realm for me.. Who I also don't think sound like Brand New. There are almost zero bands that I get BN vibes from, because of the sonic variety in their back catalogue and that fence they sit on between indie, punk, shoegaze etc.

Not trying to be a hater but I feel like this 'sound' and the Basement/Turnover blend are totally oversaturated at the moment, seems like you can throw a rock in a crowded room at the moment and hit someone that plays in a dissonant alt rock band or a washy 90s throwback band. At least every new band that comes up on my radar seems to fit into those camps.

 

The tracks that have it the most are king of no man, hunting trip, and little wounds. Especially in the guitars. Also low vocal approach.. also don't think captain sound anything like citizen and turnover

 

I don't find the guitars much like Brand New, they're much busier than most BN songs are, however there's the occasional verbed out bend that BN borrowed from Modest Mouse and most sad-rock bands are doing now. They sound like a band that if someone said 'These guys listen to Brand New a lot,' I would say, 'Okay I believe you,' but when I hear their music Brand New is far from the first thing that comes to mind. That's how I feel about a lot of bands people liken to BN.

That Hunting Trip song immediately sounded like a sad Turnover to me.

Every single time someone says, "Hey! This band sounds like Brand New!" I try to listen, but I feel like I can never hear the similarities that others are hearing. I suppose the only exception would be when so many of us thought those Republic of Wolves songs were Brand New (8 mother dammit gosh freaking holy flippin' bejeezus YEARS AGO), right before Daisy.

Speaking of Citizen, is there a thread for them here? I've never been able to find one. And does anyone know when their album comes out? I've been sorta out of the loop

I don't think cws sounds like brand new - a bit poppier imo. But I think they sound less like turnover or citizen lol

Brand new is a sad rock band too if we are making that comparison they just are better at it than anyone else.

 

Yeah, I'm not saying this album is a spitting image of anything BN has done, or that this band sounds exactly like them, but it's hard to deny similarities.

Plus the album is just damn good, so you should listen to it for that reason alone.

 

The only time i've ever heard a band emulate a similar sound to the general "Brand New" sound was Citizen's Everybody Is Going To Heaven. But it was a little too on the nose imo.
